I have already started feeding my cows. Usually here in tenn, it's november till i have to start feeding..
A already shortage of hay for my area, not enough rain to make the hay grow for a second cutting, and now having to feed real early, is making some of our area cow raisers sell out.

Since i cut and sell 600-1000 rolls a year, including 60 rolls for myself, I'll have hay to feed all winter, but lots of people won't.

I was talking to a farmer 40 mile from where i am, and he says he has already feed some of the first cutting of hay. He will not have enough hay to get him to winter much less through winter..

Is every body having this problem this year???

In short no. had a bumper crop of hay here in western NY I usually get about 500 bales of first cutting off, and this year I got over 700. At this point there isn't a chance of having to feed up any early.

NW PA is dry as a bone. We've been feeding hay for almost a month.Looks like only one cut of hay this year.We might be able to green(brown?)chop some grass on towards fall.

Maryland, I had a excellent first cutting of red clover/oats, was coming back nicely. Its all burnt up & brown now. I started to cut what I thought was the best I could salvage .... forget it, nothing there but brown stems. I had a local guy with cows pickup 120 bales from the field on the first cutting, said he would be back. I haven't heard anything from him.... I wonder if he has sold his cows?????

I feel for you guys that are dry, we went threw about 4 years of dry winters and summers. this year it is so wet i cant get my first cutting done. just now getting dry enough in the low spots to get the small tractors over but still too soft for the baler and tractor. last year we could cut and bale some the same day it was dry standing up. this year 2 days drying and it is still wet/green in spots.

we had some winters there wasnt even a muddy spot around the round bale ring all winter.

Been feeding hay here for 4 weeks now. Just got 1.8 in. of rain this week and still don't have enough growth to graze yet. Sold down 10% of the cows. Will sell some more soon if we don't get rain soon. For the last 5 weeks been getting hot winds and low humidity and has done a number on all crops here. Last year was just as bad.

I am across the county line from you in Fairview..

Every one I talk to arund here has about half of what they need.. I have pleanty for me, but haven't filled all the orders I have this year.. Doesn't look like there will be any second cutting on the fields i've cut this year..

I have more to cut, but a\waiting on some rain to put moisture back in the grass.. Right now i could cut/rake/bale one behind the other.. No need for drying time..

Rain has been almost nonexistant here. Pastures are like a burned out lawn. Have been feeding right through, never stopped from last winter. Hay is pretty scroungy, and thin pickins this year. No hope of second cuttings either.

rain has been real spotty in north west il southwest of me they got 3.8 inches about a week ago we got 2 tenths we got another 2 tenths 2 nights ago. the only things growing in pasture is thistles. i will need to start feeding hay in the next few days. i hope i can find hay to feed my cows this winter. this morning i saw some corn is starting to show signs of firing on soil that is rocky or heavy clay.

At this time I could almost go out and cut hay but because its been so dry I'm not going to or I might loose the good pasture I have at this time. Now if we get some good rains between now and sept. I'll probably cut and bale hay again. Most of my fields are up about 12-18 inches right now. I'm in Missouri close to the lake of the ozarks

I'm with old on this one. I have two fields I have yet to cut. I don't want to lose the field after cutting and am hoping to get the first cutting off in the next two weeks, and get a second one in before frost. One thing is for sure, the windows for cutting drying and bailing have been plenty long. By now the semi loads of hay should be passing by my place on their way south and west with extra hay. I have not seen one go by yet. I am guessing most around these parts have sold it locally or are keeping it for their own use. While the rainfall totals in our area are near normal, the vast majority of it fell in early June and has all but stopped since then. On the flip side, there looks to be a bumper crop of corn growing though with many fields showing 7-10 foot tall plants and larger than normal ear counts and size that look to be surviving well. They also show little signs of stress from the drought condition, at least in this area. Hopefully those with corn fields planted can make up the difference.

Here in SE MN its been a very dry year to. We received an inch last week but the pastures are so short they are going to need a lot more to get growing. I have two herds and the one I'am going to have to start feeding about mid August without serious rain. Its been close to 60 years since my dad before me or I have had to feed cattle before November. I have been buying any extra hay I can get my hands on and hopefully I can get by without chopping corn. Hav'nt had to buy hay in 60 years either, always have extra to sell.

Feeding hay to cattle on pasture here in central PA. Just nothing there anymore. Haven't had to do that for 20 years.

Our pastures have dried out.. The grass that is there, isn't much better than dried out wheat stems..

We need some good rain around here in a bad way.

I have quit selling to horse people for 45.00 a roll and selling my hay to farmers for 35.00 a roll.

Not good business to take this much of a cut, but it helps the farmers stay above ground..

Alot of small farmers have sold all their cows and some of the larger ones have sold some of theirs.. Cow prices have dropped some what in the last couple of months because of the extra cows being sold..

I need to roll another 600 rolls.. I have already rolled 865 this year..

Now i can't find fields to cut that has good hay or not just burnt up..

There is a real band of dry here in south to south west Minnesota. Will end up being a lot more cornstalks baled, as well as more corn silage for the dairies.

If the corn makes anything - real dry.

Folks seem to adapt around here, hay prices rarely go up much here. Some, but not much.

What will the farmers have to do, buy hay for the winter? That really adds in extra costs that aren't needed. Doug N
