The Heart of America Tractor cruise was held Saturday in and around Maryville, Missouri. 200+ antique tractors -- some real beauties! About 700 photos from the event are posted online at www.Tractorama.us -- see "HoA Cruise" link, or there are several links on the home page.

Impressed with the variety, and from that distance they all look pretty good to stunning. Unfortunately there are a lot more tractors than activities to use them, so I can see the tour attraction. If I was fully retired and itching to get out, then I'll be on my first one. They have one in north central Illinois that primarly runs the old Hennepin canal road, and uses traffic control at major intersections. However the photos I've seen from drives in the more western states look real attractive because it appears they use back roads and have little traffic.

This year, the cruise route had two sections with traffic, but most of the route was quite traffic. Last year, almost the entire route was soft traffic.

Clearly, Allan is the wisest memeber of this board and one of the few that realize the danger of this type of activity. Tractors were never designed for the highways, and to use them for this purpose is pure misguided folly.

I have to agree with Allan 100%. Tractors on public highways, disrupting traffic and wasting fuel for not legitimate reason. If you must "show them off", take them to a show, not on the road.

No, Camp Quality. It's a camp for children with cancer.

Camp quality, I thought I might be wrong on that. I was invited to participate, but just didn't have the time. Maybe next year. Are the final counts in yet on just how much money was raised? I know that in past years the dollar amount was quite impressive.

Allan:
Isn't that photo quite clearly an accident involving a tractor being hauled on a trailor? Perhaps It is not relevant to "tractor parades," unless you believe no one ought ever to haul a tractor on any highway?

My view is "when anyone is hauling a farmall on a highway, the same rules apply as if it were an ambulance; everyone pulls over and waits for it to pass."

I would suspect there is more of those old red ones still working than any other kind. At least, seems like they have held up quite well.

Allen, I have enjoyed your posts over the last year but your opinion of tractor shows and rides puzzles me. I have lived in Iowa and Nebraska and attended both shows and rides. I have found them to be well organized and policed for safety. The DOT has been doing a very good job of keeping unsafe loads under control at most of them. The person in your photo could have just as easily been someone on the way home from Lowes with lumber. Give the tractor guys a break.

Sorry, just my view of the world I guess.

However, the practice of a group of grown men, running around in short pants and parading those old tractors up and down the public roadways, while all the while tying up traffic without even so much as giving it a second thought, is just being done in the wrong sand pile to my way of thinking.

I agree with Allan. Seems like an odd thing to do with old tractors, dangerous too. I guess differnt strokes for different folks though?

Have to agree and probably hardly any of them actually use a tractor for its intended purpose.Tractors are not toys and treating them like toys is what gets people killed and hurt.

You will if you look at the link posted for the Heart of American Tractor Cruise.

Now, that said, if I was driving a tractor out on the highway on a hot Missouri summer day... I'd be wearing short pants.

Up here it is time to bale, and I'd rather spend my time doing that.

Todd,Mr. Allen attacked green hay balers last week and in my opinion was rude to a kid who had just finished rebuilding a Chevy motor last night. Sounds to me like Mr. Allen needs a vacation.

Oh, come on now.

You've never heard me attack anyone or any piece of farm machinery; fact is, I've got a "thing" for old farm iron.

I was joking about the baler just like I joke about the 4020 John Deere tractors. It always seems to produce a "response" from the green guys. :>)

And, if telling the young lad with the engine the facts of life, which he might as well learn now while he's young/fresh anyway, is being rude, then so be it.

Anybody that knows you from this forum knows you wouldn't intentionally say something to hurt another. I do agree with you about tractors on roads. Back in the 70's I transported a jd scraper machine (earth mover) by driving it from Hastings, NE to Colorado. Hiway 6 is probably still backed up from me driving that thing!

We use to take three miles of gravel road to avoid a mile of black top or pavement just to save wear on tires. Now look, they are buying new tires to drive on the highway.
