I am a die hard Dodge man, but I'll tell you from experience if that Dodge has never had any front end work done it is going to need a lot of money stuck in it. Ball joints, track bar, u-joints, probably hub and bearings, steering gear? That stuff I just said is good for about $2,000-$2,500.

That plow on the Dodge will do a lot a damage to a truck's front end and drive train, otherwise I would recommend it over the Ford.

If the Dodge is in decent shape...that price is a steal for a 96. It still had the VT pump.
For that money you could fry the trans and throw in an ATS HD with a converter and still be ahead.

Buy the Dodge and save yourself a lot of grief and a lot of future repair money. Ford has fallen off the scale on quality and 99 is not a good year. They are actually getting worse the newer they get. The Ford will nickel and dime you trying to keep it on the road. You will be changing starters, alternators, airconditioner pumps, transmissions, lock up junk converters. These trucks are designed very bad under the hood and in the dash area to the point of being absurd. The blend door will probably break or already be broken. That is an unreal job to change. I have five fords and it is a constant maintenence nightmare to keep them fixed. Get the Dodge. They can't be as bad!

Well, as a Dodge/Cummins guy...because I"m a Dodge?Cummins guy that owns two, a "96 and an "02, you won"t hear me say anything bad about a Power Stroke or a Duramax either. I"ve had great luck with my "96, just had the trans rebuilt at 240+ thousand, had the "02 rebuilt at 25+ thousand, and I"ve still got them both. Regardless of the milage, my concern would be that plow on any truck. Just like a tractor with a loader, its probably seen some pretty tough use, even if the engine and trans laughed it off. What about the frame and the other running gear? It might be a great deal. They both might be a great deal. If I"m selling you a truck with a blade on it, I"m telling you that my grandmother only plowed with it on her way to church on Sundays, because I"m selling it and you"re probably buying it. Good luck in your decision, no matter what it might be. No matter the outcome, chalk it up to experience in hopefully a long, happy, productive, and successful life.

With that kinda miles if 4x4 check out the front end close for loose ball joints,u-joints,and everything else. If not rebuilt yet it likely needs something.

depends on the previous use and maintainance. Neither companys have good automatics, but id take a ford auto over dodge. Cummins motor is a great motor though

I highly recommend the cummins over the power stroke. I work on both. The cummins is just so much simpler. Less moving parts. I see the cummins go 500,000 miles.

Low mileage trucks.
Never owned Dodge, good truck though.

May want to ask TheDieselStop.com

Link

on the 7.3L drivetrain forum what to look for in the way of maintenance.I think 2-10-99 and up was the build date for running extended life coolants in super duties - before that build date, I think you need the 'green stuff' with DCA (diesel coolant additive). On that board , do a search under 'GOOCH' for all things coolant - he's the guy. Also advice about TYMAR air intake.

If there is one place that has more STOOPIDITY than yt.stewpid, it is thedieselstop.stupid.
Instead of having yuppies, wannabee farmers, and small time gardeners, it has high school Harrys dreaming of their first truck, wanna bee truck drivers and useless a@@holes who have "chipped" their truck, voided the warranty, and are now totally p@issed that Ford will not honor the warranty. Oh, I forgot the about the idiots that told them how to try to defraud Ford by denying that they had ever modified the vehicle.

Both are wonderful trucks, both have the potential to reach 300,000. I would be careful when buying the truck with the plow, a plow is a good bit more abuse than standard driving.

i like both motors too. they are both located in the same town near me. i am 16 years old and it would be my first vehicle and since im short on money i'm leaning towards the cummins. i want to follow in my grandpa's footsteps and not take out loans. i figure i can scrape up a few extra bucks turning in the scrap metal on the farm and maybe sell one of my toys if i have to
