Sometimes I wonder what's more fun, starting this MD or runnin' it. She still gets a little air in # 1 injector line, but clears up after a few seconds.

I didn't have an air problem last year. It does need a head gasket, but I don't think that would have anything to do with it. And there is no holes in any of the lines and all lines are tight, What could cause this? Pump leaking down maybe? Thanks, Doug

Thanks for all your input. Looks like I'll start troubleshooting. I'll try thermostat first and go from there. My luck though it'll be the gasket.

Most likely is head gasket. diesels heat up more under a load than just putting around. my.02 Rick

Could it have a loose/slipping fan belt or clogged radiator (inside or out) or coolant passage clogged with hard water/rust deposits or injector pump not timed to specs or an 'iffy' thermostat (whether new or used)? If thermo isn't always opening like it should, it could be letting the coolant produce bubbles sometimes (as in boiling). You don't want to crack a head by getting it too hot and/or not giving it enough of a cooldown before shutting it off. Let us know what you find.

Looks like you just like to watch it blow black smoke. Me too.

If it isn"t loosing coolant, it isn't leaking. With that said, monitor the level and be sure it is not loosing any. Bubbles would be there even when cold and running if it is a combustion leak. If the Thermostat is stuck shut it could be the problem. It needs the Tstat, but not a broken one. If one cylinder seems to take a while to get going, (and you are sure it is running on gasoline on that cyl) then it may be a bit low on compression. A diesel tester is needed to check it. JimN

Hi Jim. No, it's not leaking any coolant, not a drop to be found. I didn't check the level today, but I'm pretty sure it's not buring it. I don't see any white smoke typical of buring anti-freeze.

When it's on the gas side, it runs like a top. I'll try a comp test. Now let me ask you this, sometimes I get a little ansy and switch it over probably a little sooner than I should, that would probably have an effect on #1 taking a little longer to smooth out wouldn't it?

On a summer 80 degree day 1 minute 30 seconds of gasoline from cold start. colder is longer up to about 5 or 6 minutes when in the 20s possibly longer. Any less and it will smoke and misfire on at least one cylinder. The switchover can be 15 seconds or so if it has been running and is not at all cool. JimN

Yeah, O.K. I'll try letting it run longer. I'm switchin over probably around 45-60 seconds. Sometimes I know it's too soon, cause it won't go off at all, then I quick switch it back to gas for longer. Picture above is being switched over too soon. Thanks for your input Jim. Thanks, Doug

It doesn't seem to lack any power, but after a few passes she'll get a little warm. It never heats up on me just puttin' around, just under a load. Now my dad said he was just runnin around once and it heated right up on him. Took the rad cap off and seen it bubbling. That tells me it's head gasket. But like I said, it's never heated up on me just putzin around. I've never seen it bubbling. Can a head gasket be like that? I've never heard or seen that before, bubble sometimes and not all the time. Anyone run across anything like that before?

MD --- When I worked on cars a bad head gasget would let hot compression gasses get into the water jacket and cause over heating.....

I'm sure there's plenty I don't know about diesels/gas start diesels, but it sure seems to me you need to get that head gasket taken care of (and head checked for cracks) before attempting any further diagnosis.

Glenn

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. But someone was tellin me it might not need one. I take my dad's word for it that it was bubblin, but I've never seen it. I thought it was kinda odd that it bubbles sometimes and not others, never seen that.
