hydraulic loader pressure

I've got a '53 NAA with an Allied Loader. The bucket is live but it's only got life, not downward pressure. The pump is mounted on the front of the tractor off the crank.

For some reason the loader doesn't seem to lift what I think it should. It struggles to lift a full bucket of snow, and as a test, I hooked a chain to the bucket and my Fergussen 3 pt 2 bottom plow. The loader struggled to lift that, too. I've watched similar loaders lift something that small and light with ease.

Tonight I put a pressure gauge on the line and found that the pump holds 1000psi at high throttle and 600 to 700psi at idle. My guess is that it should be pushing 2000psi or more. Do you have any idea what is "average" for a psi on a unit similar to this? How much pressure can the hyd. cylindars tolerate? The pump is older and could easily be worn. I can't see a name on it, but it looks rebuildable.

Your pump pressure is low...The other part of the equation is the diameter of your lift cylinders. Together, these determine the masimum lift. If you can double your pressure, you will double your lift. The third thing is volume...usually when a pump wears to the point that pressure is compromise, volume will also be reduced, adding to already poor performance.

Here's the pump. If it's not here, it's in the "Help Identify" area.

FWIW, it's a "Char-Lynn" vane pump.

As said could be a Vickers or some other type pump like Prince or others. Take a look at some pumps at Baums or surpluscenter.com

To post pics you'll either have to host it by putting it someplace in the photo galleries at left column on this site linking to it or host it someplace else online like photobucket.com or others and link it to here with the tag link or url.

Common pressure for a hyd pump on a loader like that is 2000-2500 PSI. You may have a weak/bad pump or a relief valve problem either one will cause that problem. Also a common pump for a loader on a ford is a vickers vane pump and if you have one of those its cost less to replace it then to rebuild it. Rebuild kit last I checked was about $100 more then a new pump
