I bought a '59 Chevy Viking truck at a sale yesterday - they said they drove it up to place it at the sale site, but the battery was out when I bought it.

The engine has a generator, not an alternator.

Does that mean it's a 6 volt system??

Or is it possible to have a 12 volt generator sytem? If so, could it be positive ground? Or was that only on some tractors??

I wouldn't have guessed that late a model truck would still be on 6 volt.

Thanks for any advice,
Howard

YO! Ive got a 55 Chev. 2 ton--2nd series--with 12 volt system and still am using the original 12 volt generator. Wore out a few brushes though, speedo broke at 80,001 miles.

The truck would have a higher amp output than the WD45. I have a complete 1960 Chevy Truck Specifications book from a defunct dealership, but it is not near the computer at this time.

Well - not sure if "bragging rights" are really in order here, but here are my two main auction prizes:

$275 for the tractor and $500 for the truck...

I just wish I was closer to Allan in NE so he could give me some pointers on restoring the cab! ha...

Definitely 12 volt system. Chevrolet switched to 12 volt in 1955, it was 1963 before an alternator was seen. Maybe 64 on some trucks. Should be a pretty good truck, is it a v-8? in wet and muddy Nebraska, john
