FIL just rented a 24' U-Haul with GMC Chassis with 8.1 I am guessing. It had 4 speed auto. My 26 year old son drove it following me down here from Park Rapids Mn. After the first stop he said I could go faster than I had been (65) on fairly flat roads. He said it was humming along at 2200 rpm just fine. He drives a 94 Ram diesel or a 2005 Ford with Powerstroke pulling a 16' construction job trailer at work as a comparison. I drove it the last 10 miles and was impressed with the power. I am guessing it got about 7 to 8 mpg which isn't bad considering my Ram with 318 only got about 12 pulling a 16' flatbed piled about 3' high with shop equipment with a lot lighter load and a lot less wind resistance. The guy I turned it into said that they had a lot less problems with them than the powerstrokes that they used to equip them with.

Ive had both trucks and now have a duramx diesel, but, towing mileage will be about the same with both trucks and the 6.0 has more power than an old 454 but nothing like the power and lugging ability of the 8.1. To fix ride quality on the chevy 2500 just put on a set of Bilstein replacement shocks. Will ride 100 times better. My factory shocks were bad within 10,000 miles of new. Either truck will do fine pulling a 26 foot 6000 lb camper but any thing over that or any type of hills in your area I would get the 8.1 or find a year or 2 older d-max.

Does the 6.0 or the 8.1 have noise problems like the 5.3?

The 6.0 has a similar sound to the 5.3 but have never heard of any problems with them. 8.1 sounds normal i guess.

I have a '05 2500HD 4x4 6.0,it tows my gooseneck trailer hauling an Oliver 60 and a CO-OP 30 without much trouble. Everyday driving gas mileage is around 12 mpg. Love the truck, but if your going to be towing alot find yourself a Duramax Diesel.

I have a 2004 Chev Crew Cab K2500 not HD, dont like ride of HD or hight off ground . Has 6 lt will tow 9400 lbs has 300 hp and 350 lbs of torque . I have no problem with power as I neaver tow over 7000 lb with it . Gets about 17 MPG on hiway 12 to 14 towing . I am no expert with the 8.1 but I did drive a 454 at work for about 10 years hiway MPG was about 13. A lot has to do with rear end ratio make sure you get right ratio for job you are going to use it on mine is 3.73 .

6.0 = pulls ok, and will pass a few gas stations.
8.0 = will pull a mountain down, but use a quarter tank just to drive it to the end of your driveway.
