I got my RIFD ear tags in the mail yesterday. These are required on ALL livestock now as a form of radio tracking. But the sad part was I had to order them through the Michigan Dept. Of Agriculture. And they were sent to me from a company in Vermont. Now with a State with NO work and a 8 percent unemployment rate, why are we making these things elswhere? I know 3 plastic factories in my area that are really slow and could use work like this, especially if its state funded. Do your States require these as well and are they coming from the same source? You get the bill from the Holstein Association, I doubt they are made in Vermont. The bill comes from them to keep the database private so people cannot file a Freedom of Information Act and get your personal herd inventory. Besides, if we had to have them made here in Michigan they probably would cost 50% more than being made in a right to work state like Vermont.

Hi Guys. Here in Australia all cattle (for all states) that are moved off property for what ever reason need an RFID tag. This tag is linked to your property identification number. Theorhetically all cattle can be traced to place of birth. System is coming on line and compliance is high.

Mitch

I have noticed around here that any cattle hit by cars on the highways seems to be missing an ear....

On a clear night, these cows around here can pick up WSM station out of Nashville ( I'm sorry, I couldn't resist).

My cows must not qualify as livestock because RFID tags they are not required in Montana! Don't know where you got your info. Maybe your state is requiring it. We don't even have to have premises ID, though I have applied for mine. Montana State University had a pilot project and tracked several groups of cattle in realistic conditions( feeders sent from Montana to OK and then to a feedlot and slaughter facility) and could only ID 85 % of the RFID tags through that process. I think the losing track of 15% of the animals isn't acceptable and I don't think that RFID technology is to the point where it needs to be for this program.

They are mandatory in Michigan since March first due to our TB problem. We had to have state issued metal ear tags in them to move them prior to that. It's just a change in the style of tag for us,thats all.

They came from Vermont because the state has a deal with the Holstein Assn to buy them. They are made by Allflex,I'm not sure just where. When you get the bill, don't throw it away by mistake, the return address will be The Holstein Assn. I came awful close to just tossing it. Thought "what the heck do they want,I don't have any Holsteins". Now that you have a premises ID you can order them on your own from suppliers that sell Allflex tags. The Angus Assn has a deal on matched sets of EID and the numbered regular ear tags. You just have to be using an Angus bull to order through them.

Couldn"t afford to make them in-state. They just don"t take that long to make. You"d have to have a production line set up that would end up working 2 or 3 days a month and idle the rest.

I went to a meeting about a 2 years ago on it but haven't heard a thing lately, but then Oregon doesn't consider themselves as part of the US so we may never get them until the Feds make us do it.
