Cleaning out the shop at work over the past couple of days, and I found a 35 gal. drum of what looks like multi-purpose grease. It's an old drum, and it doesn't look like the grease has been disturbed since it was put in the drum. It seems a bit thinner than grease should be, especially since it's been kinda chilly lately. Would it be adviseable to get a grease pump and use it? It'd be mostly on mower deck spindles and mower and tractor parts. The drum says "Multi-Purpose Lubricant," but I can't remember the brand name. Any ideas on what I should do with it?

Is the grease real stringy? If so that grease was used in caterpillar track rollers, very much wanted by caterpillar guys.

Rub some on your face and pull down a toboggan and wear a turtleneck and go downtown in a white caddy and have some fun!

Several years ago I got a couple of pails of old unused grease from my uncle who worked for a petroleum company. I have been using it on plow bottoms and exposed hydrulic cylinder rams for the past 25 years or so with very good results. The grease looks as good as the day I started using it. I'll bet you can come up with a lot of ways to make use of it.

To bad your up so far from me. I sure would not mind haveing it as I know I could find something to do with it even if all I did was put fence posts in it to let sit. With that said you can probably find a lot of things to do with it. Steering boxes etc etc etc

Don"t overlook the fact that if it"s old, especially if it"s a brand or company that"s kaput, petroliana collectors might be interested.

howdy in-to-deep how goes it? sounds like you got a barrel of the old 600wt rear end lube. lot of the real old tractors ran that in the rear ends and some of the old gearboxes like in rotary mowers and such. it will be about the consistency of pudding. i dunno what you can run that in nowadys.

If it's 600-weight oil, sell it to the steam engine crowd -- a lot of the old steamers used that weight of oil, as well what Glennster mentioned above: My Fordson F uses 600-wt in the rear differential. I'd love to have a whole barrel of the stuff...

Unless you have a use for it I wouln't bring it home. When you get it home it will be something else to get rid of when you find out you have no use for it. I have several 5 gal pales of unknown oil from my previous employer. Stan

Do you or your neighbors still use an elevator? I have two I use, one in the barn for hay and one in a corncrib for the overhead bins. At the end of the season I pour oil in the trough and let the flights spread it out the whole length to keep it from rusting. That way it wont squeek so bad the following season.
