Excuse meeeee eeeee e for rantin n ravin buttttt ttttt after like 3 days and 8 hours on phone/hold to Upgrade from XP to Vista it drove me to drink n here at Easter even lol. I went to Church Good Friday but my mind was on this dern puter lol

I bought one new puter with Vista already on and liked it buttttt ttt I had to run the upgrade from XP to Vista on this one and that was a 3 day nightmare marathon grrrrr rrrrr

MY ADVICE fron anyone upgrading an old XP to Vista is TAKE IT TO THE GEEK SQUAD AND PAY THEM ANYTHING THEY ASK AND SMILEEEEE EE cuz I wouldnt do it for a thousdand bucks.

Despite being pretty good on puters and having ran alllll lllll the preparations n windows upgrade advisors and uninstalling a bunch of incompatible software and hardware n doin like alllll ll that Microsoft suggested she still refused to install Vista grrrrr rrrrr and each time it spit out u had to wait 45 mins to get back agaIn cuz it saves NOTHING

AFTER a day on the phone with 4 different Hewlett Packard Tech Support dudes named Haahbib from Pakistan, none of whom spoke understandable English mind you, I finally got this Geek who spoke English who in a minute knew the exact problem n hot to fix it (I had told alllll lll the previous dudes there has to be a Windows Knowledge Base article on the problem but nooooo ooooo they took remote control of my puter or hung up or sinmply couldnt fix the problem) The Error message was " cant reconfigure computers boot configuration" althOUGH I had ran every BIOS update n had my boot n all like PERFECT as HP n Microsoft suggested. It took a RUN regedit n change one line of data to fix it.

Sooooo ooooo ooo I finally get Vista instaleld but thennnnn nnn Windows Mail which replaced my Outlook Express POP3 REFUSED TO RECEIVE E MAILS GRRRRR RR Again, had to be on phome or hold like 5 hoursssss sssss n ranted n raved 3 different dudes till finallyyyyy yyy they semt me to the Windows Mail section of Vista n this dude fixed it in one minute after HP simply gave up and at first Windows refused to help cuz it was HP licendes upgrade untilllll l I cursed n demanded to talk with a supervisor

Vista has improved features I like buttttt ttt its a memory hog, I had 2 GB of RAM and added a third GB and now its decent but still a tad slow even on a dual core 64 x 2 3800 chip. The other puter only has 1 GB of RAM but its a factory original Vista installation n its still much better.

I was so frustrated the other day when working on it a neighbor called n said a cow of mine was out but I didnt even go out n look, let her get run over or leave I really didnt give a darn at that point lol I never realy liked cows anyway

Thank yall I feel better now

MORAL OF STORY either buy a new puter with factory Vista or hire a geek at any price to upgrade from XP DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME LOL

God Bless n Happy Easter "He Has Risen"

? about VR in reply to John T, 04-07-2007 08:06:38
Does the voltage regulator have to be bolted to a well grounded frame type tractor component? Mine is currently hanging just by the wires and it is not charging. I shorted the F terminal on the generator and that did not do any good. I did not have my glasses with me and I could not read the letters on the VR terminals. I have seen your posts about troubleshooting and will reread them and try shorting it properly when I start it next time. Thank you SDE

Win 3.1 Ok
Win 95 Ok after a year (SP update + usb driver)
Win 98 Great
Win ME Dud
Win XP Great
Vista Jury is still out; I am keeing my wallet closed until it offers something I just gotta have, don't see it yet.

Microsoft had the same pattern with DOS, every other one was a keeper.

If you still run MS 98, and I do on a couple of older machines, be vigilant, MS does not publish hotfixes or updates against security vulnerabilities.

well...there's absolutely nothing wrong with XP and I fail to see what is "out of date" on the windows xp, so FORGET about me going and installing something like that in any kind of hurry.

oh and yes have a blessed easter holiday, he has risen.

I wouldn't upgrade to Vista unless it was part of a new compuer. I got it and It was soooo slooowwww. And this is on a Dell 2.6g, 1g mem laptop. According to the specs it should run just fine. I only installed to learn it and take screenshots for my job at an isp. Finally got done and went back to XP. It was like I upgraded from a 486 to my real 2.6g machine

I never liked Windows system from my first computer. Not user friendly at all ! I never could figure out how something so defective could rake in soo much money for a company.

Next time I'm going to check out Apple. My nephew has one and my Dad really likes it too.

Vista seems to be a big enough issue of install disfunction that my University will not deploy it for another year. That tells me to avoid it like the plague. JimN

The company I work for (a fortune 100 company) currently has no plans to upgrade to Vista either. We just went to XP a year or so ago.

BUT-Not so fast! My wife got a new Dell at work this week with Vista. She has a computer 'god' coming Monday to make her 2007 Peachtree work on it, but just about an hour ago figured out it won't shut down! You call up the 'start' window, tell it to shut down, and it looks at you like you must be kidding, and does nothing! I am not impressed, even on a new machine! Greg

I hear yah John. I too feel fairly comfortable with computers, but will never go to Vista after the hassle I had going from ME to XP. I had an HP scanner on my ME system and after XP it wouldn"t work. HP said they had an update (downloadable) to make the scanner work so I dutifully downloaded and it WOULD NOT work. Several email exchanges with "techs" still didn"t solve the problem. Finally they had an Advanced Support Group guy call me and 45 mins later after much changing in the registry (and me trying to write myself notes as he"s talking) he had the scanner working. However the next time I wanted to use the scanner it wouldn"t work again. I threw the HP out and bought a new Canon scanner. I keep a bunch of those printed out emails and my handwritten registry notes in view to remind me never to upgrade again. XP is decent for anything I want anyway so why would anyone upgrade? If we boycott MS enough, do you suppose they will get the message? Ron - retired EE.

I know exactly what you went through. I am no where as knowledgeable as you are in computers, or understanding towel heads.

I had the same problem with vista, so I finally called a friend of mine, and he told me how to reset my computer to operate like it was programed in the past. That fixed all of my problems, but I am still operating with XP, and I want to keep it that way. When ever that computer update appears on the bottom of the screen, I ignore it and it will go away.

Hey Oliver -

Just a note that that "windows update" you mentioned is for patching holes in your Windows XP - not for upgrading to Vista.

You really need to keep pretty current on Windows patches since they fix security vulnerabilities (among other things). I've had two servers hacked in the last two weeks at the university and I HAVE kept them current on updates. It's even worse if you are unpatched.

I second most everyone's gripes about Vista in that it's a memory hog, slow, terrible ordeal to upgrade to, etc...

Best try it on a second computer first. Many computer companies are sueing MS for stateing "Vist compatable" My experience is that it runs on just about anything, but some fancy things do not run. Right click on the program and "run as administrator" helps. OH, BTW, it takes 8 to 10 gig of HD space on a typacal install. I recomend that you leave your main computer alone. Try it on a secondary one to see if you like/can stand it. The CD contains all versions ( I think 7 versions) of it..if you install and do not enter a reg number, then pick your version and it will give you 30 days trial.

Computer knowledge got away from me about 20 years ago, and one of the great choices I have made in my life is the decision not to try to keep up. I'll go your "take it to a geek" idea one step further- I signed up for internet at a local place solely because Ed was so knowledgable and helpful on all computer stuff. So we have a deal- whenever there is something that needs doing on mine, he calls and mentions that he needs to stop by in a day or two "and do a couple of things". He has the good grace not to even tell me what he's doing, much less explain how he is doing it. He bills me a modest amount, and everybody is happy and stress free.

"Not to try to keep up" Excellent plan Mike. I agree wholeheartedly. There is much more to life than having the "latest" in computers. Ron, retired EE
