i bought a 92 chev one ton and need a motor would like to put a cummins in but a friend suggested putting in a 354Turbo perkins he says the bell housing and fly wheel will bolt right up. I know massey used chevy gas motors but would the perkins have the same bolt patter for the flyweel or bell housing.I also posted this on a few other forums. any info would be greatly appreciated.

What's the Perkins coming out of? The combines didn't have a clutch in the bellhousing. Massey tractors bolted up to the cast housing. White and Oliver tractors had a bellhousing with a clutch. I don't know if the trans would bolt up in place of over/under or not. Next trick would be the trans input shaft to the flywheel. Remember they would have a slow governed speed.

Seems it all depends on the price of the engine and how much work you can do. A lot of P-series Chevy vans have Cummins 3.9 diesels bolted to TH400 transmissions as well as 6.2 diesels, or 350 gas engines - all with the same drive-train. Perkins, Cummins, et. al. have a standard SAE mounting pattern - and GM uses adapters for the Cummins - just like Ford does with the IH 6.9 and 7.3s. It seems good deals for the Cummins 3.9 are the most common since they were used in the P-vans. In regard to gearing - no overdrive with up to 3.73 axle-ratio works out well enough for highway speeds of 65-75 MPH. 4.10 is pushing it - the the fuel mileage drops like a rock.

Am I correct, assuming that the P-vans are P-Tater-Chip vans ??? We still call them "Tater Chips", here...

Yes - potato chip and/or bread vans. And some have 350 gassers, some 6.2 diesel, and some the Cummins 3.9s.

Yep, gear ratios. Presumably it has a gas engine at present (that information is important as a gas engine might rev twice that of a diesel). Also weight and where the weight is, in relation to the present engine. Torque might be another problem. You didn"t give any information on the box either. Just a bit more to changing motors than "will it fit?"

funny u bring up gear ratios. i was contemplating switching rearends 4.10-3.73 but since it will be used mostly on farm and short trips with stock trailer maybe up to 50 miles i decided to leave it. Ive got a four speed with big leaps between the gears good for gas motors. probably not on perkins? Also have a 90 chev 1ton w/6.5 4sp. man. motor came out of 94 1/2tonw/automatic. i converted it to manual pump figured out how to keep throttle position sensor on pedal and rolled it 3 weeks later. 6.5 is good with that four speed behind it, i want for power though.

I saw a perkins in a 68 chev 1/2 ton about fifteen years ago. It looked really good in there and sounded nice. Didn't have a chance to talk to the owner. Jim

you should be able to hook it up because their is an adapter to go from a SAE bellhousing (Perkins ) to the chevy trans bolt pattern. I am not sure what SAE# the perkins has (#1,2,or 3) but I do belive you should be able to make it work. you might have to do a little finagling with the thro out bearing, and pressure plate/clutch disc to get everyting happy....let us know how it goes...was contimplating a simmilar switch in a 1/2 ton with a smaller diesel of aprx. 50 hp. and upping the rear end ratio to help get it mooving....this would be strictly a town and back farm truck to run on veggie oil...good luck Shawn
