A mechanic told me that you could change the solenoid on the starter to a twelve volt one. He said that you could leave the starter alone and just change the alternator. I'm not so sure this will work with a positive ground starter. Also how big of a battery do you need to run a twelve volt system.

The starter will work with either polarity but to convert it to 12 volts you also need to replace the field coils along with the solenoid.

If its 24 volts its diesel and there's a 12 volt positive ground system and a 12 volt negative ground system. They are tied together by a 24 volt generator (or maybe a 24 volt alternator if an air conditioned cab) and a 24 starter.

If its gasoline its 12 volts already, positive ground with a generator.

I suspect your mechanic isn't really familiar with the 4020 24 volt diesel electrical system.

I converted a 24v 4020 to 12v. You do need a 12v starter as the original is an isolated ground and needs 24v. It would be like using a 12v starter on a 6v system.
I used a 12v starter and an alternator. For batteries I used the original 12v batts hooked up in parallel. A little rewire of the lights at the switch and it was ready to run.

If you're talking about the solenoid that is probably possible because its a matter of the coil voltage but as far as the starter that's a big change all the solenoid does is pull in a plate that connects the starter to the supply voltage. I'm not famaliar with the JD 24 volt system so I'm going to leave it there.

I am not sure what your mechanic is refering to, as the 24V 4020 starter is neither pos or negative ground. Both pos and neg starter terminals are isolated from frame ground. You need a 12V starter,as that 24V starter will have very little power when operating on 12V. You need as much battery as you can fit into the battery boxes, 1800-2000 CCA is not out of line.
