Ever since I remember I have worn a hat, went to a private school and wore a "ball cap" every day,Tractor and truck makers mostly.Always had a decent Stetson for church. NO truth to the old wives tale you will loose your hair, too many years to count of wearing a hat more hair then I care to take care of,get the old high and tite every three weeks or so.Had a customer years ago comment on the "curl" or curve in my hat.He said I reminded him of an old farmer, I asked how is that? Just like an ol' farmer the "curl" comes from sticking your head in the mailbox looking for a check.

hats in vehicles? Re: O/T Do you wear a hat? in reply to Sunny 4 acres, 04-03-2007 09:44:49
Why do so many little old men wear felt hats while driving and while walking to/from the vehicle? The rest of the time they rarely wear hats?

Probably habit from the days of open top cars and gravel roads. My dad always wore a cap with the top that snaps to the bill. I don't know what they're called. He learned to drive in a 1914 Model T on gravel (at best) roads.

Can't stand to be without a farmers cap.

On the other hand, I can't work at all with gloves on. Now, that's tough when you live in MN.....

I usually wear either my boonie hat or a cap from a tractor dealer when I'm out of the house. My eyes are a little more susceptible to sun damage so I need either a sun shade or sun glasses. Also, back where it's gotten a lot thinner seems to be the Deer Flies favorite target, so a hat helps alot there.

When I worked on my grandfathers farm in western moutains of Maine in my teens, the sun was never that strong and we did not need hats. After that when playing ball, played for 20 years after high school. I always wore a baseball cap, but I liked cowboy hats, they where hard to find in MA. Looked at them for years there was never a large selection all pretty much generic you know one size fits all. Then about 5-6 years ago, things changed I bought a '57 Case 310, found this site
found a place in MA with a Great Selection of cowboy hats. Bought an excellent straw hat which I wear nearly all the hours I an off from work except in the extreme cold the its a hunting cap with flaps. Other then these two it's Harley leather ball cap or the Red Sox World Champion hat, and of course of the three Patriots Super Bowl hats.
Sorry for the long post butyou did ask. Chuck

I wear a hat most of the time. I wear a cap the rest of the time. There is a distinction between a cap and a hat around here. I have about 8 felt hats anywhere from my work ones to my 20X dress hat. I have about that many straw hats. I have no idea how many caps I have.
I consider my hats a tool when working. Kind of like an umbrella.

I have a full head of hair and dislike wearing hats. It does get cold between Nov and April, though. I have four fur flap top hats. One rabbit, one beaver (RCMP issue winter headgear that I picked up on a hunting trip to Canada) and two fake fur. The fakes are just about as good as the real down to about -10. Nothing beats the beaver for super cold though. Old saying: "If you want to keep your feet warm, put your hat on". Also, when running an open station tractor a baseball cap is a necessity on a sunny day. My favorite is a Yankee cap with the big NY on it. Draws questions.

I don't wear one as much as I ought to. I do have a ton of ball caps, but if I'm gonna be out in the sun for a while I like my Tilley hat or a boonie style hat. I got sunburned real bad on my bottom lip years ago at Ft. Campell and ever since I have to use sunblock and a hat if I'm out in the sun for more than an hour.

Yep, I have several (10 or so) sweaty, greasy, nasty ball caps for work. Current one is a Dekalb/Asgrow my mom got at her work. Also have a nice Bass Pro Shops one for town and so on when I don't feel like messing with my hair. I forgot my hat this morning and felt kinda funny without it.

I wear a baseball hat or a cowboy hat all the time I'm outa the house. I don't feel dressed without one. Keeps my bald head from freezing in the winter and from getting burned in the summer. I love being bald; have been since late 20's; handiest thing in the world.

Only time I wear a hat is if I'm driveing my car or truck other wise I hate them. Plus from what I have always been told its hard on your hair and if you want to loose your hair fast you wear a hat. Now if thats really true or not I don't know but its a good excuse for not wearing one

Yeah, feels real weird otherwise. I`m the guy that goes to church with my ball cap in my back pocket. Kind of a security blanket for guys:) I figure with always wearing a hat, I only have to go to the barber about 2-3 times a year. Like a lot of folks I have about 100 ball caps, but only wear 3; work cap, kickin around cap, and my real nice Denver Broncos ball cap for extremely special occasions.

I have several baseball caps that I can wear for about as long as a baseball game. Same with my cowboy hats. I like them I just can't wear them for long without a headache. I do wear long sleeves though a lot even in the summer when I work.

Couldn"t stand the way they felt. Now my hair is too thin to protect my scalp so I wear one most of the time outside. I have quite a few hats - a good felt cowboy hat (or two) for winter, several straw hats for summer because you never know when one is going into the lake, and a few ball caps for yard work. Then there are the hiking hats - good brim with chin strap to anchor the hat in the wind.

I didn"t used to use a walking stick on a hike, but that"s another story.

I still have most of my hair, so no I don't wear a hat. Except at work where hard hats, ear & eye protection are manditory. I do wear ear & eye protection around home when working. Deer & moose hunting we have to wear that flourescent orange hat the bunny huggers in the Ministry of Natural Resourses require. They claim we can see the hat colour but game animals in the deer and canine families can't. Pure balony. I've watched deer step out, look directly at each hunter even when they are hunkered down in the cover. Then turn and run at full speed.

I have noticed my cattle stare at me for a long time if Im wearing orange. My Border collie sure sees colors,he has a green and an orange frisbee and will bring the color I tell him when he wants to play.My wife works with a woman who has her Border Collie trained to open the refridgerator and bring her a small bottle of beer. She keeps a towel looped in the handle so the dog can open the door and the dog does close the door too.My dog would clean out the fridge if he knew this trick.

Almost Always! I wear them at work to keep- the hot metal chips outa my hair, but the bill can get in the way so I spin it around most of the time at work. At home, I won't go outside without my hat on. Right now my work hat is one for Chick workholding- Got it at IMTS '06 in Chicago. My favorite before that was from a JD dealer in Alaska- Before that, a JD racing one I got while in the tractor safety course through the county. It's hard finding a good work hat, but once I do I wear'em till they're dead!

Very well could be! I was there in '04 also, and in 05 and 03 I was at the Milwaukee tool show.

I didn't have to pay a thing other than a 1 time $5 entry fee to get into the machinists club at the tech. Never had to make a single meeting or anything, just pay 5 bucks. Dind't take much to get out my wallet... hat same $5 is good for as long as I'm a student in the machine tool program up here at FVTC- but I graduate in May...

Can't wait!

I used to never wear a hat when I was living in Calif. When I moved back to MN and also started getting a little thin on top, I started wearing a cowboy hat. It first started as a way for my wife to find me in a crowd at tractor shows or fleamarkets. In MN not very many guys wore cowboy hats 15-20 yrs ago. Then I found how well they shed rain or sun. I found it to prevent that first sunburn on the chrome dome every year. Never had a bad sunburn until the top of the head got fried one year! That really hurts! Now I feel naked without it. It's hard to take it off ever indoors. I stood all day at an auction Sat. in the rain -had water running off all day long. Bought a outback style blaze camo hat 2 years ago to wear during hunting season. Found it to look nice to wear most anywhere- sort of classy looking when in places not associated with hunting. I couldn't believe how many complements I recieved from women I didn't know while shopping in Sears, Wal-Mart and other places. Bet I was approached by at least a dozen women in the first month. One women wanted to know where I bought it so she could get one for her husband for Christmas.

I wear a hat with a large brim for sun protection in the fields and to keep things from getting down my collar in the woods and creeks. I just had my first skin cancer surgery two weeks ago and wish I had been wearing hats instead of caps earlier in life. If you spend a lot of time in the brush and briars you can keep a lot of things from dragging accross your face or ears by tilting your head and letting the brim catch the impact.

Ball cap most of the time, toque all winter, and floppy fishing hat thing all haying season so my ears don't burn.

I had 3 skin cancer things cut off me before I was 20 so I wear white dress shirts from the salvation army while haying. Best dressed farmer around I think until I get covered in chaff and grease.
