Hey , I want to thank you guys for the info on door openers..To answer a question about if it's "balanced" or hard to open....I can pull it up with one hand and it goes up straight and smooth..I bit the bullet and bought the 3/4 hp opener Sears has on sale now..$199.00 but it looks stout..I'm gonna take off tomorrow and put'er up..Plus I gotta put front brake pads on my Silverado pick-up..Thanks again , Roy

listen to "oldtimer"s advice below. been there, done it. i would add that you will want to check for "snags". by this, i mean you should leave the opener unhooked from the door- completely. with the door in the open position, push the door down by hand- from the top, just like the opener does (pulling it down changes the fore-aft position of the rollers travel in the track). you'll have to do this from a step ladder or similar. as the sections go around the curved radius of the track, check to make sure the edges of the sections do not contact the jamb. this is where a lot of problems occur. if the sections bump the jamb, it puts pressure on the opener. if it touches the jamb, adjust the track out away from the jamb. your weatherstrip should be the only thing that contacts the door sections.
also check to make sure that the track is spaced properly from the edge of the garage door. usually there is excess slop side to side, which will make the door move side to side as it's going down.
if you have extension springs, make sure they are the same length when extended. if not, this will make them pull unevenly, causing bind.
i've had a chamberlain 1/2 hp screw drive since 1993, and have had no troubles with it.
one thing with a screw drive. if you decide to lube the screw (i never have) do so sparingly, as most oils attract dust, and will cause additional friction when it gets cold. don't know where you are, but here in n. iowa, it gets cold, and oils get stiff enough without dirt involved.
sorry about the long post.
just my 2 cents worth.

I JUST REPLACED THE PLASTIC GEARS IN MY CHAMBERLAIN.THE PARTS GIRL SAID THE LIFE SPAN IS 7 YEARS, WHICH IS WHAT I GOT.BUT I NEVER LUBED THEM FROM DAY 1.AND THE MANUAL DOES NOT SAY TO LUBE THEM.AND MY WIFE SAID WHY ON EARTH ARE THEY MADE OF PLASTIC?ANYWAY,FROM NOW ON,I WILL LUBE THEM ONCE A YEAR.ALSO, THE PARTS GIRL SAID CHAMBERLAIN WAS THE LARGEST MAKER IN THE WORLD.

Its not the opener something is wrong with the setup "like wrong tension on springs on door " .
a friend of mine had same thing happen with Genie
he had a spring slip on shaft . Totaly wiped out opener "Striped jackscrew" . I have used a Sears for 25 years on a 12'X8' wood door and it was used when I got it About 5 years old radio went out so I bought a Genie radio and put on it is still working after 30 years .

I had a Craftsman on a 16" wooden door, a lightening strike fried the cicuit board.Sears wanted 2/3 of the cost of the whole unit just for the board. I got a Genie screw drive, was missing one of the clips that hold the section s of the screw together. I called the 800# listed on their manual and they overnited me several of the clips. GREAT SERVICE That genie was still running trouble free seven years later when I sild the house. Good unit good company I recommend them.

Follow on;A16 ft. door is a very common size door
look, around many homes use this size. Unless your door is extremely heavy,a standard 1/2 hp
should handle it easily.I have installed the
1/2 hp opener on some very heavy doors, but
they MUST be properly balanced.
Lots of luck Bob
God Bless

Now your talking about my old job (this is
straight talk NOT B.S.).For over 30 years I
installed G.arage D.oor O.peners for sears (and
others).A G.D.O.is only designed to take your place,if you have a hard time raising the door
so will the G.D.O..You should make sure that when you raise the door(G.D.O.disconnected) it should stay at about half way open on it's own.
Make sure to balance your door properly.I'veseen sears last 25-30 yr's

If your door isn't balanced to open easy it will just eat up more gears I had a 14 ft. all wood door in Calif. an it had to be well balanced on the springs or the door opener would just grind and stall. I had very one too.

Some of Sears openers ar Chamberlain. You can look at the "what fits" on the back of the transmitters and get an idea. Sixteen feet is a pretty big door. You would probably get better life out of a commercial door opener but they're a lot more money. Or you could just buy a cse of the plastic gears.

You can extend the life of those Chamberlain plastic gears about 1000% if you relube them every year with a dab of Mobil 1 synthetic grease. BTDT.

I replaced one of those that had a chewed up gear last summer. My tenant threw away the old one before I got back to pick it up.
