Dump trucks for the farm

Got to thinking about all the projects around the farm that I want to do this summer.

And it occured to me that I could really use a dump truck.

Nothing too big. Mabey a 3/4 ton pickup with a dump bed on the back. It wouldn't even need to be road worthy, just as long as it drove well enough to make it around the farm.

Anyone had any success finding something like this for relatively cheap?

I don't know what your land is like. But, I needed a small dump on my farm - but a 2WD dump truck - here - is useless. Land is too steep in-between fields. And, 4WD dump trucks at a reasonble price are scarce. I finally bought a 85 Ford F250, 3/4 ton, four-wheel drive, diesel for $500. I then put a slide-in dump bed into it. No modifications needed - it just slides into a standard bed. Bought the dump-unit used for $600. The truck has a payload rating of 3600 lbs., and the dump-body insert weighs 800 lbs. - so with the dump installed, it can haul (legally) 2800 lbs. I don't have it registered for the road anymore and run it on farm diesel a.k.a. heating oil -which is an added bonus. Works great for an $1100 rig.

If you end up with a grain truck, be aware that the density of grain is about half of dirt and gravel. It will be very easy to overload because there is still room for more. Insurance is cheap, but in Ohio tags are burdensome.

An idea from my BIL. Find an old county dump truck with the engine out-cheap. Put a 4-wheel trailer hitch on it to pull with your tractor using the tractor hydraulic system for the dump. Handy around the farm.

I bought a 1952 Chevy 2 ton grain truck last year for $700.00. Road worthy and farm insurance is only $81.00/yr.

Due to the length of the bed, has the origional wood bed, it is somewhat limited compared to a dirt/gravel type dump truck. However it is better than what I had and I use it all the time.

This is what you need, min of a 1T rated and dual wheels. Dirt dump, I guess this is what you want, beds are just to heavy for single wheel axles. Dumps are not cheap! Even really old ones sell for a bunch. I bought a 1 78 Chev 1T that is in very good shape 18 years ago for $3000. I just used it to haul 3000 yds of dirt on my farm. Worth the price I paid just for this job alone! This truck still has the Toyo tires that came on it when I got it. It also had over 300,000 miles when I got it. It was an old State Road service truck. Empty weight 7600 lbs with a door tag of 16000 GVW
