OK....time to start an arguement...Yesterday an old farmer friend told me that the best tractor that was ever put on this earth was a John Deere 4020. He has worked em since they first came on the market and are still around his place. I still do see many of these still doin it here in the Sunshine State where the heat and the sand will give a machine a fit. Anyone know of a better one out there?

It's hard to pick one, but if I had to I'd go for the Phillip's Acremaster. The job they were built for they did very well and were way ahead of thier time.

I am a IH man my self, but my grandfather made a good living with a WD45 used it as his main tractor up until he retired from Farming in 1995.
I dont recall hime ever looking for another tractor.
He did have a JD utility tractor for a wile, but he said it was worth more sold than being used.

That WD45 and his all crop 66 made a good combo.
You know I bet if I could get his set up and not have to pay $10,000 an acre for the land. I could still make a good living with them on a 150 acres.

I am glad you brought that up. I am and will remain a die hard farmall nut, but the 4440 is a great tractor. I bought one new in 83 and ran it for 9 years without doing anything to it. It also started easy in cold weather for a diesel. I used it to custom cut silage and man it would crank that two row chopper across the country. Gradually most folks here quit cutting silage and a guy ask me to price it and I did and he bought it. I still miss it sometimes.

I would have to say everybody has the best and the worst. It all depends on what day it is and how the day is going. I have operated two shades of green, four types of red, orange, blue, yellow, harvest gold and all have there good and bad points. I"ve operated from small to large and anyone of them on any given day can be the best or the worst in my little opinion. Also all of them have at least one modle you couldn"t pay me to run or own. I do have one question for the preacherman. How do you hill start a JD-4020?

Park it on the hill. When you get ready to start it, push in clutch put it in 8th gear, when she starts rolling down hill let out clutch, should fire right up. P.S. can't do this with a power shift, have to keep good batteries and starter on them.

A tough question because it transcends many eras. My neighbour had an Allis WD45 and pound for pound that tractor had balls up against anything you name. We had an M and it was a great tractor, but how can you compare these 50's tractors with 70's tractors or newer..too many things to compare, weight, rated horse power, gearing..there were many great tractors out there that suited certain needs and the majority of farmers were satisfied with their purchases for their particular purpose. I have 6 tractors each one has qualities that make it stand out but not surpass the qualities of others..a tough question to ponder indeed!

VW Dealships rip you off too and they don't even know what's wrong the the car. They couldn't figure out how to get the radio out to find the code on the back so we could use it again. They caouldn't figure out why the car wouldn't start. They tore the door apart but couldn't figure out why the door was sticking in the first place and still stuck. They charged $25 for a knob for the seat that broke in 2 minutes!!! They wanted to charge $100 for a rubber piece to hold the antenna. I just used some silcone sealer to hold it in place. It's done a pretty good job too!! The Tires Plus guys refused to work on the car after changing the starter and it still not working because they didn't want to end up chargeing us thousands of dollars trying to figure out what the problem was. I went online to figure out what was going on with it. They finally figured out that it was the computer brain that was bad and wanted to charge $1500, but they could get a used one for $300 after we let it sit at the dealership for a month or so. So we did do that. Most of this happened less than a month after we bought the car. Granted it was used. My whole family changed the trunk lid on the car this afternoon for a mere $53!

sounds to me like your check cleared the bank. You'd be suprised how many things can go wrong when that happens. I would look for any levers or linkages around the areas you were working. Odds are you may have accidently bumped something, or leaned on a control linkage and bound it up. I had a 4000 and nothing I could do could hurt that tractor, other than head gaskets...I had the 4 cyl eng. Mike

DD 214 is a must, I would advise you contact service officer. Not to file a claim but to find VA clinic close to you. They can advise you on what you need to get started. Time to get going is now. Most Vet.Orgs. will help, (don't have to be a Vietnam vet to get a VVA rep to answer your questions). Post this site again & let us know how you made out.

I have to also give a vote to the Massey 1100 I've ran and repaired all the different colors from ford 8n to JD 4440 and more. The 4020 PS is a good tractor no doubt but the 1100 is better in so many ways from capability to comfort to ease of maintenance. The 1100 was ahead of its time and it's biggest flaw was that it wasn't as well marketed as JD's or IH's for that matter.

MF 1100 diesel was about the same weight and advertised HP as 4020. List price was about $1000 less than the JD. MF 1100 was more comfortable, better handling, better fuel economy, more gear choices with Multipower, hyd adjust seat, draft control. Would outwork and outpull the 4020 everyday in everyway and use less fuel doing it. And yes I have run them both.

For less than 80HP a Ford thousand series. Take your pick on which HP you want. Very simple and reliable, no bells and whistles and the price is right. The ford 5000 is the flagship of this crowd.

For gardening..... Farmall 140. A well outfitted 140 with fert. dist. and a Cole planter is absolutely the best for a "large" garden. That tractor also has alot of gumption for a small package!! It will surprise you.

Above 80HP, I don"t have an opinion. I don"t play farm that big yet ;)
