mike a. tenn thread on restored/not restored? ..[expand] got me to thinking on collector verses collector. I think there are two types .What do you think?
1 as my self collect tractors and restore them to as close to as original as I can for that given year IE correct bolts steering wheel mag and such. I injoy the search for NOS parts and original parts as well. I also only buy tractors that are odd or rare or low serial number or had new improvement for that model year as my 1948 John Deer A which is the start of distributor and stamped frame and box seat not pan seat and lighting became a standard not an option.
That being said there is also a collector that collects all sorts of tractors but does little or nothing to them and may have a 100 or more. Sooooow folks which type of collector are you?

Guess you'd call me a user of older tractors. One would have to be pretty special to me to spend the money to do what I would call a complete restoration. I prefer to call most of mine reconditioned as opposed to repainted or restored. By reconditioned I mean they look as near original as I can make them, without modifications if original serves the purpose.Like I've said before, the one big thing I did to my 77 was to go to a 12 volt generator because I use it everyday on the silage cart. My 66 and 70 however, are still 6volt with large cables, grounded to the bell housing instead of under the dash like they were. Not right, but functional. Somebody who isn't an Oliver man wouldn't know the difference, but I do. Just little things like that is why I don't call them restored.

I would like to be both ,but don't have enough money or time. I never was much to leave one alone. I always had to tinker with them. If I own one I want it ready and able to do a full days work if ever needed to. But I really don't use any of them much anymore. I got spoiled by newer tractors.

third party image

this is my pulling tractor and work horse here on the farm so its not the prettiest thing out there but it runs great. Well most of the time. I am slowly getting it in nice condition but not perfect so i guess I'm a fixer upper for now. although when i fix something i tear it completely down and primer it and then put it back ready for when i do the final paint job.

Well i'm not a collector but would like to get the tractors we have into some type of simular condition as we're still using them . The H is all original as it has been in the family since new in 1953. The D-4 Cat has also been in the family since 1937 bought new .and also all original.theres more but they were acquired used and much later and none are for sale .

to be honest, i only "collected" my '51 TO-20, and my '55 TO-35 after we bought this old farm, to bush-hog, mow, get firewood, and put in a few food plots for the game. i guess you could say i got 'em cuz i needed 'em. it wasn't til after i'd had them awhile, and started maintaining and working on them that i found out the "history" behind them, which was when i was "bit by the bug" (the fix 'em up bug that is)

they're still my workhorses and always will be, but i really enjoy working on them and doing the mechanical repairs, and even a little "pretty up" work once in a while. i'm getting ready to do a "refurbish" job (as one poster put it) on my TO-20. i do want to paint it as close to "correct" as i can....but i'm just a tinkerer...not a collector.

I collect old Farmall stuff and very little of it has been restored. I do have a couple of semi rare ones that I am restoring now to as close to original as possible. For the most part I just try to keep some of them running to work some of them just sit here. When I find a cheap one I bring it home for parts me and several neighbors are always needing something to put on working tractors. I collect all the old McCormick implements I can find cheap. It breaks my heart to think of all that old stuff that has gone to scrap. For the most part I just like tinkering on and running them old jewels.

I'm in between somewhere. I fix them enough that they run very well and look presentable. Nothing I have is correct as it came from the factory, but nothing I have is neglected either.
