i own a 06 duramax with the allison tranny would like to hear all good /bad things about these engines. i got mine in late december so i only have about 6000 miles so far on it.i work with 2 guys at work one has an 02 with 150000 0n it and the other is an 03 with 140000 on it both with the allison trannys and so far no engine or tranny problems at all. the one that surprises me is the 02 because it does some hardcore idleing i swear i dont think he hardly ever shuts it off during the daytime hrs between 6am to 6pm. thanks for your inputs

I think a Duramax is ok for light duty. Just like the old Powerstroke was. Heavy duty, no.

Cummins is a 6 cylinder engine. Longer stroke bigger piston, bigger rod. common sense is amazing if applied. Why not compare the conecting rod from a C281 out of a farmall 450 to a D282 out of a farmall 560. Figure that one out and it will make things pretty clear.

GM must think the Duramax is done. 2008 introduces some new wonder diesel from GM. Would GM just admit they can't build a diesel and purchase Cummins engines?

 No, not really . . . in reply to buickanddeere, 02-28-2007 21:14:53
That's not what is going on. GM is planning to use a pre-existing small diesel that's been sucessful in Europe, and start using here in light trucks - e.g. 1/2 ton trucks, Tahoes, etc. Just like they had in the past with the 6.2 and 6.5 diesels. The Isuzu Duramax is still being kept, improved, and used for the heavier stuff.

Ford had tried to go the same route. They hired Navistar to create a new light V-6 diesel so Ford could start making light diesel vehicles like GM has since the 70s. So, Navistar started building a new plant to make the engines - and Ford cancelled. P*ssed a lot of Navistar people off.

Ran four Ford 7.3 power strokes hard for years landscaping and never had any motor problems. Have an 06 Chevy Duramax/Allison w/ 20,000 miles getting 16mpg and love it hands down. Would run 7.3 power strokes but 6.0 power strokes are poor and everyone I see around here in MD is trading in there Fords and going Chevy Duramax/Allison to get to job done. Dodge cummins are great, but w/ the tranny problem history they have they are out of the question when it comes to working hard. Around here the truck pulls are won by the Chevy Duramax/Allison set up (Wow!)

worked for 5 gm dealers in 32 years,as mechanic, parts manager, service manager.retired two years now,i could never under stand why any one would pay 4 or 5 thousand more to have a truck that has more service and harder to work on,when thay could have a big block with a four speed to move some thing (which i have).sorry a diesel in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck does not make it a OTR truck like a peterbilt or freightliner. chevy is a dan good truck good for the long haul(distance),and value.i would not treat my tractors like most treat there trucks. sorry to step in on your tread, this was just my thoughts

Have a 2004 2500 HD Duramax and Allison and I love the truck for heavy hauling. Pull a 25 foot gooseneck and load 18000 lbs of tractors and weights and go up over the Mountain pass and can hold 52 mph. Transmission temps stay at 180-190 and the thing will stay there and lug all day long. Get about 13 mpg loaded, never checked it empty. My dad delivers travel trailers in U.S. and Canada and has a 2002 Duramax with 270,000 and just changed the injectors at 210,000, Of the 8 trucks he has pulled with you would have to pry this one away from him with a big bar. Plans to run it to 400k and then trade it for a new one unless he retires first. With the GM trucks you get the power train plus an awesome smooth ride and quiet cab. Migraine

Very early in the Duramax/ Allison trans production they had an issue with the trans down shifting too far in tow/haul mode going downhill with a heavy load. McCroskey's in Chariton Ia had 3 trucks at the same time waiting for new engines. In each case the trans down shifted too far, over revved the engine, and tossed the rods on the same hill east of Lucas Ia on U.S. 34. To the best of my knowledge they fixed that problem long ago.

Good engines, I have personally owned five of them. Didn't have any problems, but I never kept em over 20k miles either. Tell your buddy he is killing his truck prematurely by idling it so much. Not good on a high pressure common rail injected diesel at all.

Well the worst thing about the Duramax is that it`s wrapped in a Chevy! HAHAHAHAHA!!

My stone reliable Cummins is wrapped in a purty red Dodge. ;)

Not start a flame war but I am proud 06 duramax owner.

GM guys say "to bad that Cummins motor is mated to that piece of junk automatic tranny and built in Mexico".

I"m pretty sure your new transmission will be wrapped in plastic or a crate when it goes out at @ 90,000 or so depending on tranny. I"m a Dodge owner and love the Cummins, but the trannys are poo. At least the duramax/allison combos are dependable (although they are ugly:), if Dodge would just build a flippin tranny.
