Oil Filter or no Oil Filter

I have a lot of difficulty finding the correct oil filter for a Perkins L4 engine.(Tecalemit filter housing, Cat no. FA2048, Element no. FG2412)This type of filter could be taken out, cleaned and replaced, it had the bypassvalve on the top of the filter. This whole arrangement is missing from my engine. I am afraid that if I put a cartridge type filter in the housing, it will do more damage than good. I plan to take the tractor to shows and roadruns only, no hard work.
Should I run the engine without a filter or put a close fitting cartridge type filter in?

Are you in the US?

The WIX Filters catalog shows cartridge #51183 as the correct replacement for the FG-2412.

It is 5.996" tall.

Don't know what may be available elsewhere.

Thanks Bob,
I'm in South Africa, but can probably cross reference the number. However, a week ago, I contacted GUD, a filter manufacturer in SA, they provided me with a filter number in no time at all, alas, it was completely the wrong filter. I suppose I'll have to keep on looking.

filters are essential to keep contaminants out of the oil. Even with little use, particles can still damage the engine. I would think long and hard before I ran it with no oil filter. Now you could probably use nondetergent oil which keeps less particles in suspension, and that might help, but it also leaves crap on your oil pan, so cleaning it every few years is probably a good practice. This is basically how all of your smaller lawnmower engines work. In engines with filters, the detergents help keep the particles suspended so they can be trapped by the oil filter.

Like I said, I would try my hardest to find a supplier of good filters and buy a case or two that will last you the rest of the tractors life.

Thanks Jay,
I suppose finding the correct filter is the right thing to do.
