I am restoring an Economy Jim Dandy and one of the axle shafts is worn. It was run without a bearing. I was thinking of welding it up with my mig welder and then turning it on my lathe. Will the heat from welding it change the temper or strength of the steel?

Andy,

Dave beat me with the right answer, spray
weld ( metal spray ) is the best way to go . Most cranks today are done with submerged arc
rather than spray. You will need to find a machine
shop that does repair rather than a production shop. If you don't find one in your area, send me a note , I have been spraying for 25 years.

weld it with real cold setting. weld a couple beads than cool with water than weld acouple more. you need just enough heat so it sticks but you do not need to penetrate.
