I have been thinking about buying a electric winch to mount on the front of my tractor for when I get stuck,it is 2 wheel drive with duals,a JD 4030 pulling a planter or when we are mowing sometimes I get stuck, what would be a good size winch to buy? Don't want something too small, maybe double line it with snatch block. Who makes a good winch, what about those in Harbor Freight? Thanks

Thanks for all the advice,When we are planting grass, the fields have to have some moisture, and they always have some wet spots that I think that I can get through and usually get stuck. Ya'll know how it is, just one more pass through that spot and then I will quit and that is when I usualy get stuck. Thanks

for what you describe I would go with at least a 25K more like a 30K or 40K. Harbor frieght is pizzing in the wind. That is a big tractor should be able to break a 3/8 log chain maybe even a 1/2 pulling it out.

I would go with a HYD one if you can't find one make your own . all you need is about atwenty to one gear box ,weld up a drum , add a HYD motor & Your in business . Have made 5 or six for different things like the back of trucks front of tractors , and utility trailers . here is one I made for my utility trailer Picture link below .

Why not just find a hydrolic powered one it would pull much more than a elect one and last longer as well

For your recommended use, I would say the bigger ther better. Ramsey and Warn are good winches, but I have heard that the larger HF winches do OK, no firsthand exp on the big ones. I paid $50f for a 2,000 lb winch and have been well satisfied with it. The control is a bit cheaply made, but whatdaya expect for $50 :)
btw a 2,000 lb one is not nearly big enough for you.

What are you pulling too? A tractor and mower bogged to the frame needs something twice as heavy usually to winch too.

A yank strap will usually get you out if you have something that weighs the same to yank you.

The trees on the edge of field might look close but 200 ft of 1/2" cable is not common and a 20,000 LB pull will uproot some pretty big stuff.

Last year a neighbour got her tractor stuck with a NH489 haybine on back. We couldn't budge it with two tractors, I had to drive mine in and get it stuck to use the loader to pick the haybine up and put planks under it. We then yanked my tractor out and then we barely were able to get her out with both machines.

I agree, the best policy is to stay out of the field in those conditions. Duals, and floatation front tires would be better still, if you must do the fieldwork. If you are getting stuck in specific locations, either better drainage, or letting it go wild in that "wetland" might be more productive and less hard on equipment and temperment. JimN
