Changing tire

I'm replacing a 16.9 X 24 turf tire. The old and new tires are GoodYears. On each side (back-to-back) of the new tire near the bead is a flat place marked "pry notch". What is pry notch for? Does it need to be placed anywhere particular in relation to the valve stem. Is soapy water still acceptable to lubricate the new tire and rim edge when installing the new tire?

As for where to put the pry notch, I would recomend putting anywhere EXCEPT near the valve stem. It doesn't matter until we go to push the bead off the rim then it tears the valve stem out of the tube. (Not a problem if the tire guy is paying attention) Another good lube is vegetable cooking oil. The cheaper the better. Never use petroleum products on tires.

On the old tire you will notice that the rim comes up past the side of the tire and dirt and other stuff can work its way in between tire and rim, the new tire the side of the tire covers that open edge of the rim to keep dirt from working its way in but with that new design you can't get a prybar in to remove so the notch for the bar and only a 2" space will not let the dirt in like the old design did and that was more of a problem on tires run low on pressure

Good info. When I cleaned the rim (after removing the tire) I did notice heavy dust/dirt build-up where I would have thought was sealed rim. So, the new tire should prevent this build-up.

Thanks folks. It's a one piece rim.

Whats that on. Almost sounds like a split rim and if so DON'T mess with it unless you know 100% how to or it can/will take your head off your shoulders. I have never seen a rim with that on it that wasn't a split rim and as I said if it is and you don't know how then don't do it with out the right equipment they will kill you

The pry notch is on the tire not the rim.

Ok then you still probably need more then just a tire hammer to brake it down

No trouble taking the old tire off. I've owned this tractor (LONG) over 25 years and there was a bit of rust between the tube and rim. I removed the rust and will paint the rim before installing the new tire and new tube.

The "pry notch" lets the tire boys insert their pnuematic-powered bead breaker.

Yes on the soap and water.

And maybe stagger that notch away from the stem.
