My sister bought herself a 2002 Ford Explorer with the 4.6L V8 in it, and with these cold below zero winter temps as of late around here, it has failed to start on several mornings. I don't know the miliage or any other details beyond that, but it made me wonder if perhaps the 4.6 was known to be cold blooded? or if there is something wrong with hers?.

i have a 02 explorer, it calls for 5w30 oil and when it gets real cold i plug in the block heater at night, plugin is located in the middle of the grill down low at bottom.

My 98 F150 with 4.6 has been starting with no problems in single digit temps.

There could be lots of issues with a no start in cold weather...likely not specific to the make/model/engine type.

I have a 2003 f-150, with the 4.6, don"t know if they are exactly the same engine. When I first got it, it would start real hard when it was extremely cold. I had to pump the peddle a couple of times to get it to go. Took it to the dealer, they said there was a tsb for hard starting in very cold weather. They had to reflash the computer. I don"t know if that is your problem or not, but the dealer would know if you need this done or was done to your explorer. Hope this helps, NorminN.B.

What weight izz the oil, you will need to look in the owners manual, I spec you need 5/20 or 0/20, heavy oil will cause the lifters to not bleed down and a no start. next I would remove the mass air flow sensor and clean the 2 sensor wires wif brake clean and see iffin that helps you will need a tamper prof T-20 torx driver.

We had a 1996 Cougar with the 4.6L for about 5 years. It was one year old when we got it and it would start very nicely even at -30F. One of the nicest cars I ever had. We have a VW Jetta diesel now. It doesn't start or drive like the Cougar but I sure like the nearly 60mpg.(Can.gallon) these days. That's 48US.

There is a sensor that measures how cold the outside air is that sometimes gives trouble, I forget the exact name of it right off hand. Both my '02 5.4 and my brothers '97 4.6 start and run very well in the cold.

YES, they are defenitely cold blooded. When the temp drops to the zero and below area ( which is very seldom) the 4.6 in my Mark VIII turns into a completely different animal. Mine has an aluminum block and heads and it gets so cold it almost acts like it can't fire the fuel at that low of a temperature. It will try to fire and try and try but will not start. Then it gets flooded and you have to wait a while, charge the battery and try again and hope this time that it catches and runs. Don't touch the gas pedal. That makes it much worse. Just turn the key and let it try to start. I noticed this about ten years ago. When it got brutal cold Mark VIII may not start. Old F-350 with cast iron 460 fires right up. Mustang with cast iron 302 fires right up. All the old 302 powered vehicles we have fire right up (79 F-100, 87 thunderbird). It is a problem. If you have to count on it, I would get a block heater installed for the coolant. I always had something else to jump in to drive but I know what you mean. 4.6 dont like sub zero temps!

The DOHC engine in the Lincoln is almost an entirely differant animal then the SOHC engine the Explorer. But it sounds like you have some problems too.

you must have a very weak or the wrong size battery. That is the ONLY possibility, UNLESS your spark plugs and wires are thousands of miles over in need of changing

It did have a weak battery in it, and it was obvious that whoever had traded in that vehicle, had taken out the original battery and replaced it with an old one, the posts were even all butchered up. So we got a brand new top of the line Napa battery for it, and it still doesn't want to start when it is super cold out, the motor spins over no problem, but it just won't fire.

Ditto my Continental with same engine- have you had it on an analyzer? Mine started to miss once in awhile (still started fine)- turned out the little old lady who owned it had never had it tuned up, so it got its plugs and wires replaced for the first time at 140,000 miles. Amazing how the computerized modern engines can compensate for defective conditions.
