Do you all us a regular bench mounted belt sander (for wood) and just change the belt for steel, or do you have a specialized one for metal?

My brother is a hobby knife maker. He uses the same belts as wood.

What I plan to do is rough shape the piece with an angle grinder then finish it with the belt sander. I like that it has both a wide flat surface and a rounded one as well. Your responses sound like I can just change the belt on the belt sander to cut metal better then clean it well so as not to get metal into the wood on wood projects.

For steel we use side grinders for shaping. when I need to remove rust, or polish, I have one that has a wire wheel head. Grinding is a faster process than sanding.

Contemporary sanding belts and discs were designed for use in foundries. Woodworkers found them superior and the market shifted over to use them for both.

I use the same sander for metal but I do change the belts. I clean the sander good when I change so no metal dust gets in the wood.
