I went and drove 6 hours one way to go look a machine..It had 2 remotes and a diff lock.

Now my first impression was what a piece of JUNK! I did my usual thing of looking for leaks and oil spots under the tractor. I did have a coolent leak, so the first thing I said was great the same thing as before...more leaking of anti-freeze form the motor, well it ended up being from the radiator..so grumbeled a little no biggie but I grumbeld..... ..... "Heck, if i buy it i got to replace radiator"

Then I go to start the tractor, well the starter missed the ring gear on the fly wheel and made this terreble grinding noise. I exclaimed in a bad mood..."What the Heck is that!!!!!" I tried it on a second and a third time, the third time starter engaged and the motor fired right up. I grumbeld more..... "dang now if I buy this its a new starter i have to get"..... ..."dang it its also 24 volt sytem got to convert it, i know how just don't want to do it" grumbeled to my self, I had driven 6 hours one way.

Before you spend money on the starter, check the ring gear on the flywheel. stan

Hmmmmm is that maybe why everyone before was mentioning a newer 4020 instead or a 4320 or even something way newer? How old are those tractors and what do you expect? They once did WORK to earn their keep so yeah all are going to be worn out or have problems and that"s why they are for sale. You just need to decide what you want to spend and let a good tractor salesman do it for you but you will get exactly what you pay for.

What in the dickens is wrong with a 24 volt system? I've used 5 4020's for years and years with a 24 volt system. If you keep the tractor in good shape, you'll have no problems with a 24 volt system.

Oh yeah, i'm glad you bought it, because you have probably wasted at least $500 worth of fuel running around looking for one.

Well when I cranked it up it had what amounts to i guess the usual smoke. I can neve understand these things, some tractors seem to smoke alot when first starting up and some seem to not. Does anyone know why?
Any ways I drove the tractor around the Tranny seemed to shift out OK. I checked the Clutch and brakes in 4th gear this time and it killed the engine!! So that seemed pretty good! As the tractor warmed up the smoke pretty much went away.

Oh while the tractor was running I jumed down to check the blow by, well Huhh no Blow by!! WOW!

Then the sales man came out and side anther guy who worked there used the tractor to cut a pasture and used a 20 foot batwing mower. He said it ran perfect while cutting that pasture. I haven't a Clue as to what a batwing mower is. Any way I was still skeptical as heck. The guy then said well lets put it on the Dyno and see what it does. I laughed to my self "This thing aint gone make 60 Horse Power at best!!" Oh well I thought I drove all this way might as well see the whole show I guess..
On the dyno it made between 95 horse power and 100 horse power. As it ran inspected the motor Very Very closly for leaks, smoke, ect....there was NONE! I put my hand under the vent tub again, still almost no blow by..huh...I scratched my head Surely something is going to screw up. I felt the block to see if it would over heat, NOPE! I could hold my hand on the block to some extent.
I kept scratching my head, surely there's going to be a foul up somewhere on this dyno...I looked at three other tractors and the dyno had always been the tall tale signs for problems.....Not this time!

I mean this in the nicest of ways, but I believe you have more money than sense. There's nothing wrong with replacing a starter bendix or having the radiator fixed. To drive six hours one way and leave a tractor sitting there for those two problems just doesn't add up.

Raleigh

From the sounds of things that tractor is a diamond in the rough. Neither the rad or the starter are hard to get at. Pull the rad and take it to a shop and get it fixed. Worst case is a recore. Price it out. Pull the starter and send it to a shop. Worst case is a rebuilt starter. Heck, call these shops and get prices on these worst case seanarios(sp?). Add it up and you will find it's not that expensive. If the 24V system is working, they work just fine unless you are hooking electrical loads to it. It can be fixed or switched over to 12V at a later time.

Anyone who has been around this old iron will always be more impressed by how well it runs and how well everything works rather than shiny new paint. Also if you find a tractor that vintage where everything works like new, they will want a premium price. Heck, if you don't buy it post it's location and price here on this board. Lots of people would probably jump at it.

John

Well I drove the machine some more afterthe dyno test to make sure.
After another 10 minutes a couple of other guys who had alot of expriance look at the machine. One guy was doing a total restoration on a 4230. So you knew he knew is stuff. One guy comment while it was ideling this motor sure sounds good, was it recently over hualed? I dunno...they seem to think the four fixes were minor st this point so did I. So when they left I said a littel prayer took a big swallow went inside and gave the man my last $7,100.00 cash money and walked away with a hat and some paper work..... ..

SO I BROKE DOWN AND BOUGHT ONE!!!!! !

Glad you got one !!!!! Now watch a better deal will pop up right next door. LOL !!! That sounds like a fair price to pay to me. I don't often hear of a diesel 4020 with diff lock sell that low here in Ohio unless it's really bad.

Price sounds about right. If you had bought a perfect one the price would have been in the 10,000-12,000 range. Fixing those minor things will help you to get to know your new tractor. So when will you get it on the trailer and bring it home, also we need pictures.

I'm not so sure you want to convert one from 24V to 12V I did one and it didn't start as good. I'd get the 12V right from the start. But the asking prices of those late 4020's is really high ! I've seen 4430's with the sound gard cab for the same money. These machines are really getting old so you are going to have to do work to most any of them.Good news is that there is alot of parts around for them. But that takes time and money too ?

When looking at used tractors you better be ready to pay for what get.

You aren't going to get a prefect condition tractor for the cheapest priced tractor you can find.

If you want a prefect tractor you better buy new or be prepared to pay above average price for the used one.
