I am looking at a 98 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 with the 5.9 engine and automatic with about 70 k on it. It sure seems to run and drive ok. I was just curious if there ave been many major issues with them. Thank you pete

have a 1990 and a 1996 1/2 tons both over 200,000 both have snow plows on and do more snow plowing then open road running and when on the open road they are pulling trailers and NOT city boy trailers WORK trailers both have 318 ci and one is a 4 speed manual and the other a 5 speed manual NEVER had a dimes worth of trouble other then things that just wears out brakes u joints and a clutch in the 90. if i could find another 96 to 99 with a 5 speed i'd jump on it.best trucks on the road for me. if you buy it USE ONLY champion spark plugs

My first and last Ram was a '97 , 5.2 , 4X4 , shortbed with all the buttons...8 to 10 mpg , driving like an old lady...Nearly died several times because of lousey brakes [ felt like it went faster when the truck was panic stopped]..Went back 16 times under warranty , 2 times on a hook..I went back to Chevy ..'05 Silverado short , 4.8 , 4X4 , 18 to 21 MPG [documented]Went back under warranty 1 time for front brake rotor turning...Been excellent so far. The only other Dodge in my life is a '49 Power Wagon out in my barn..

Ran my "97 to 280k...okay truck, but it had it"s little problems. Nothing really broke until I hit 200k.. At 280K I smoked a valve and put a hole in the piston... it still ran though! So it"s got a new motor and trans now.

Only thing to watch for is intake leaks, plugged catalytic converters, worn track bar, and don"t tow in overdrive.

Seems to me that I saw that Toyota is in some trouble back home for underreporting defects to the government. Not as trouble free as they claim. Nothing like the Mitsubishi trucks that had wheels falling off in traffic though.

I went to your web site and one thing stood out there were only a few dissatified people and most of them drove there trucks for quite afew miles. If I had that much trouble I would have taken it back and got my money back under the Lemon law.
the one that I'm still wonding about is the guy who's catalistic muffler was blocked and it exploded and the blast blew oil back into the intake fouling 6 out of 8 plugs. Sorry but I'm not buying that one.
One thing is if you put a website like this you will attract a few people who had real problems and a whole bunch of Idiots who just dream things up because they hate someone or something.

That same year truck I have. 1998 1500 SLT. It has 120,000 miles on it now. I think there's better trucks out there ,but I willn't scare you away from one. The front ends will need normal checking and greesing. Mine likes gas ,but it has a big tank on it so I can get 350 miles on a tank ,but it cost about $90 to full.

I have a 98. I know there was a service bulletin on the transmission. They replaced a valve in my free of charge when I told the dealer that it seemed to make a little to much noise when it was cold. Overall I'm happly with it, but the 360 is thirsty.

What are you driving? A FERD? Must be 'cause FERD folks are the only ones that got to downgrade the others. Dodge and Chevy just keep on keepin' on!

I have a 2000 2500 2WD with the 5.9 gas auto. It has about 90,000miles on it and no tranny problems. We have 7 in our fleet and 4 have had trannie problems. Other than that just wear items, and the blower resistors go often for some reason. I agree it does like gas, avg mpg is 11-12.

I got a 1996 Ram 2500 4x4 with 166,000 miles and I think original tranny. I rebuilt the front end not long ago. Put an intake gasket in it at 80,000 + ? rear diff. side bearings around 90,000 ? All in all it has been FAR better than the Chevys I had before this. Now I just need some new tires and get rid of these JUNK Coopers ! I'll never buy them again.

I have a 2001 extended cab, short bed, 5.9, auto, trailer package, 3.92 gears, diff lock. Really like it. Pulls a 25 foot trailer easily. Does like gas, but has not been in the shop once! Has 50K on it. Ride is terrific. Nickname is the Greyhound.

HAHA...issues? Most of the front ends on the 4x4's fall out from under them. Radius rods are crap. I sure wouldn't want an AUTOMATIC with that cummins. Burn it right out in 70,000 miles, pulling a deckover trailer.

I've got 200k on my '95 and have had no problems with the front end or trans other than the throttle position sensor does'nt seem to last long, going on my 4th one.

Actually the Cummins doesn't come in the 1/2 ton, so he's talking the 5.9 gas. Good vehicles, auto trannies don't like to live behind a lot of abuse, some U-joint problems on front end, but no more than similar mileage pickups.
