The old semi developed a popping noise coming out of the stack. It sounded like a air compressor pumping air. It is an old Detroit 8V71 two stroke. I found the cylinder that was dead by pulling of manifolds and finding some raw fuel. First thought was bad valve or valve spring. So we pulled the head yesterday to find that part of the piston broke. When that broke it banged all around till it went out the head. Before going out of the head it bent a valve so more work. Not like us farmers have enough already!!

Given the age and miles it's no suprise. A valve failure could have taken the piston out. Has anybody over revved her? At this age and hours valve and cam follower springs do get tired. A piston slamming into a valve that's too late seating sounds like this mess. If rebuilding her, an all new set of every spring maybe a consideration. If the valves have been floating/bouncing some. It would explain the loss of power too. The C series injectors are much better than the S series and even the N's. Is the blower being driven under, normal or over?

It is a non turbo version. It is rated at 318Hp but I tend to wonder somedays. You have to keep the old girl wound up to have power.

Is that a turbo or non-turbo? And what is the horsepower? Reason I ask is I have just been given a 1974 GMC tractor in rather good shape other than the cab needs some attention and was curious about the engine. We have an '83 with the 6-71 turbo and it seems to be a good engine. Thanks!

That brings back old memories of the earlie days of coal haulen with them double breasted Yahmaha's as i would go thru one a years and it got to the point that when one side would go down nurse it home pull that side down and by 10:30-11 at night that side was rebuilt and come in the next night and do the other side and you were good for about a year . My one buddy worked on them and had all the parts ya needed and i would call him on the way in he would be waiting at the shop with everything . For some reason i always got stuck with the down under work like droppen the pan (HOT) pullen the rod caps and the mains roll in a new set of mains and by that time i was done with that he was stuffen the first hole in and by the time i had everything torqued he had the valves set and the rack done .
