I had the car apart on the lift and sent the missus to the parts store to pick up disc brake membrane. Also known as disc brake quiet, it's the stuff you put on the back of the brake pads to keep them from squealing.

She got to the counter and asked for the stuff and the guy laughed at her and told her in a loud voice that no such thing exists. He then got the attention of the the other counterperson and proceeded to ridicule the missus.

It was at this point that a customer handed my wife the package containing two packets of disc brake membrane.

She handed the counterman what-for on the spot.

I resisted the urge to march in this morning with tempers drawn, but I had kids in the backseat and have to set a good example....

Dang Kids...

Let's go Mountaineers

Aaron

Had the heads on the bench from by 55 Buick and sent my young bride to the parts store in 1967 for a couple of valves and other stuff. Came back with a stack full of what I sent for. Counter fella must have been looking at wife and not looking at the paper work very close as for the bill was a fraction of the cost. Mother was present so all was good.

All the big box parts places want rock bottom labor cost-soooo you get what you get. Cheap parts with a life time warrenty. Who's life time?

If I send the Mrs. or anyone that doesn't know the technical term, along with all the slang terms, for a part - I call ahead first and make sure they know who is coming to get it, etc.

I agree that the old parts counter guys are getting hard to find... these new ones just don't seem to care about customer service anymore... I guess that's what we call "progress."

I worked in the automotive aftermarket parts arena for 30 years and it is sad and frustrating to see the type of service available at most parts stores these days. A good parts person is worth their weight in gold, in my opinion. As a suggestion, I go to the web site of the parts store and look up my own parts before I go. That way if someone cannot or will not look up the correct part I can give them the part number and be on my way. Most of the big parts chains, Advance, Autozone, NAPA and O'Reilly have pretty good web sites.

went into the local auto zone and was looking for a electric brake controller for my ford p/u. just as i spotted what i was looking for a teen ponytail girl comes up and asks if i need some help. i ask for a electric brake controller and i got a blank stare and finally she said "we don't have anything like that". so i proceeded to walk over and pull one off the shelf and ask what this was. nevertheless, i walked out and went to the only real auto parts in town and got one and a lot of help with some other parts i needed also. there is a lot more to being a parts salesperson than just tapping on a computer to find something. sadly, most of the 'old timer' parts sales people are gone and the 'new generation' computer sales are here to stay.

We had a similar situation...I put a serpentine belt on my old Jimmy. The belt lasted right at 3000 miles, then just shredded, the previous one was put on when we did an overhaul and it had lasted about 50000 miles. My wife happened to be going to town and I handed her the belt and the receipt and asked her to get one on warrantee (1 year). The counterman proceeded to tell her and everyone else in the store with a very loud voice that evidently "her man" didn't know how to install a belt. She argued quietly that I did and to give her a belt... he finally did. I called the store and proceeded to lay him and the manager out. Then, ahhh, the power of the net, I emailed the office of Advance Auto Parts and tell them my story... the next day the counterman and the manager called and apologized to her! She said that was all well and good, but what about all the people in the store that thought her and her man didn't know anything. End of conversation...but she was pleased....and I still do shop at Advance, I am always the one to get the parts and I don't take any guff. Mike

When they ask if I found everything, I say no, I was looking for a small pail of luck. I was almost out of luck myself, well to tell the truth, what little bit of luck I had, the light of day got to it and it went bad. Had one clerk say they just got a shipment of luck in but it was bad too.
