I just got home from looking at a 1964 International B414 Diesel. It looked like a pretty decent tractor. What is you opinion of these tractors and what is a fair price for one these tractors in good condition.

Thank you for the advice.

As a long time B-275 owner I can recommend the B414 as a good 40hp utility tractor. As jdemaris posted it was the next step in the evolution of the B275. The B250('55-'58), B275('58-'61), B414('61-'68) and later the B276 & 434 were made by IH at the old Jowett car factory in Bradford, England. I believe the B250 was exported to Canada while the later B275 & B414 were also exported to the US. For some reason IH stopped exporting the B414 to the US I think around '64 and started sending B414 chassis to the US to build the 424 and later the 444. When the 444 was discontinued IH began exporting these tractors from England to the US again as the 354, 364, and in its final form as the 384. I'm not sure how long the Mahindra relationship lasted but it did start in the early sixties with IH setting Mahindra to produce the B275 for the Indian market. Mahindra produced variations on this same model for 40 years. Luckly I have a dealer not to far away who is an old time IH dealer and also carries Mahindra. He has always been able to get me the parts I need from one of the two sources.

I can't tell you what's fair - but I come across them often - in the $2500 - $4000 price range if they run. It's a great little utility tractor and parts are easy to get. They come over the International counter, usually in Indian Mahindra boxes. This website sells aftermarket engine parts. If you ever found one with power steeting it might be worth a few bucks more. It is a tractor designed in India mostly by Mahindra & Mahindra with some help from IH and Volta - and they were built in India and England. As I recall, the company was technically known as ITCI, which stood for "Incorporation of International Tractor Company of India" and formed 1963. Tractor started out as a B250, then a B275, then a B414. The latter - the B414 got a 154 c.i. diesel instead of the previous 144 - and the B414 is still being made new. Those being sold here are now under the name of Mahindra - no more IH. In fact, IH sold their "International Harvester" name and cannot get it back. They recently changed the name of their engine company from "Navistar" to "International Engine Co." They tried to buy the IH name back to use, but failed. Main parent company is still based on the "navigating the stars" thing, which was shortened to Navistar. The recent Mahindra tractor that is based on the B414 but with an updated engine is as follows: The E40-DI has a three cylinder 115 cu in diesel. Everything else is almost identical to a
B-275-414 including manual steering and a 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump, except it has a single
clutch. It is rated 39 engine HP @ 2450 rpm and 31 pto hp.

The info you provided for the B414 was great. I have a IH-424 Diesel. Hate to impose by asking, But could/would you provide the same info about the 424? I really don't know much about it. Thanks in advance. Bob

My dad had one in the '70's. I liked the loader. It had down pressure and an automatic levelling setting so that I could do a good job on the landscaping of my new house.

With the differential lock it was better in mud than my MF35.

The downside of the 414 was that the diesel engine was so hard to start Dad plugged it in in spring and fall, as well as winter. Without power steering it was a chore to steer when loading. It smoked enough that my dad wore a gas mask while running it, and eventually he traded it on a gas tractor.

A 414 is a nice size for general purpose use. Is it Mahindra which builds a copy of it?
