I've been looking threw the Northern Tool and Equipment online catalog. Where is the Northern Tool brand made at? Does anybody have any experience with them?

I bought a sprayer that was supposed to come with a tow cart. I never got the cart because they said the product description in the catolog was incorrect. Also they charge tax, but they cannot tell you who they remit the tax to, so I believe it becomes part of their profit.

Northern was started about 30 years ago in Burnsvilla, MN under the name of Northern Hydraulics. It was put together by the Kotula brothers from the Iron Range (northern Minn.)probably when they were layed off from the mines. They sold parts for making log splitters and other things (trailers, etc) when the first energy crunch came on. Since then they have expanded tremendously and market just about everything. THEY MAKE NOTHING!!!!! They just sell. Much of the stuff is foreign so buyer beware.

Much of their stuff is name brand. My only experience is a chain saw sharpener I purchased from them. It is the Oregon brand and happens to be made in Italy. My only complaint is that it took them FOREVER to ship the thing. I received it three or four weeks after I ordered it. I suppose it takes the boat a long time to get here from Italy.

Some of there stuff like log splitter and pressure washers are assembled in Farbault MN. They might make other stuff there but I am not sure what else.

I have purchased a few items from them. Like most stores, many items made outside US.

I liked the way they did business and their product, and will do business with them again.

There is a northern tools store near me in Ashville, NC, and a harbor freight as well. I like being able to put my hands on the stuff to see the quality. They have had a lot of stuff I needed, particularly trailer parts, brakes, axles, along with welding and sandblasting supplies, too. It is harder to shop online if you don't know the quality of an individual too.

I bought a Northstar preasure washer from them a couple years ago; Honda OHV motor and CAT pump - the manufacture basically put the parts on a cart, and assembles hoses, wand, nozzels.

The package is pretty well put together, the price (includeing shipping) was about as good as I found at the time.

One thing to watch for. From "studying" Norhtern, Grizzley and Harbor Frieght catalogs, I think some of the hand tools - and I am thinking of a couple electric tools, are exactly the same from the three sources, but Harbor Frieght is always cheapest, sometimes substantially so.

I have not tried HF or Northern electric tools yet, so I can't vouch for the quality. Experiences on this board vary widely. I have bought the Grizzley version of a rotary hammer drill (like a small Hilti) and am very happy with it.

I bought a submergible pump, worked well.Made in Italy.I want[wife] to order the tin sign"This is an IH farm"on sale for 9.99.Some of the things do seem a bit overpriced. The ATV plow attachment you could probably make alot cheaper yourself. If I wanted any of the hand tools Id just go to Sears and save shipping.Sure do send me an awful lot of catalogs for me just buying one pump.Alot or maybe all the made in USA items say so in the catalog otherwise safe to assume China maybe.

I like the "Pittsburg" and "chicago" lines of tools as my second and third tool sets.....

I bought HF's big air compressor a few months ago...OK so far..... you know, they may need more care, but some guys can tear up a cinder block..... Don

Like many other equipment and tool companies - I don't think they make anything. Their stuff comes from all over the world - just like Harbor Freight. Some very high quality, and some Chinese crap. So it depends much on what exactly you are buying. Some things they are priced kind of high, but on some others the pricing is very good. Their product support is very good - I've been buying stuff there for years. I bought a small, 2 stroke-cycle gas-engine water-pump from them a few years ago - a real odd-ball made in Italy. Ended up needing a part - and they actually had it! Also bought a solar-panel from them this spring - it arrived broken, so they sent a second one, it too arrived broken - and they finally just gave it to me - free of charge. I fixed the glass and now use it.

I don't think they even stock anything. It seems anything I have gotten from them is direct shipped from the manufacturer. So they are really just a catalogue, a middleman.

i agree. you are better off going to your nearest harbor freight and other local carriers like them to get things. Northern, in my opinion, sells imported junk with the exception of a few hundred outrageous priced items!!

you are honestly better off not fooling with them because they have some outrageous shipping prices.. Even their "deals" are more expensive by the time you get the item.

A couple of HF & NT stores are 100 miles from me.

My experience is the opposite of yours.

Both carry cheap China stuff. NT is a bit more upscale, with a little better store, product line, quality, etc. HF is cheaper on identical stuff most times, but NT will have a better quality product at a still low price many other times.

Maybe it helps that I am in Minnesota, where they started?

I found some deals on the SK stuff they have, but it looked like they produced their own end wrenches.

Harbor Freight carries decent stuff, but there sockets and wrenches are kinda low end.
