What a storm you guys in NE sent us in IL last thursday. Electric lines still comming down today and transformers blowing up. One utility estimated 20 days till they got customers back on. We were only out a day, can't imagine 20 more.

This area of South Dakota got hit hard with ice one year ago. Some customers went up to 4 weeks without power. Today, one year later, they are just getting done with tightening lines, straightening poles, etc. There was something in excess of 10,000 broken poles. Utility crews from neighboring states came and pitched in for a couple of weeks.
Ice is worse than any blizzard!

The ice hit use before it got you guys. We where lucky that the lights didn't go out but we had 3 inches of ice then 4-6 inches of sleet on top of the ice then 12 inches of snow. Been a lot of buildings falling down in my area over the last 4-5 days. I spent the day shoreing up the roof on my barn because it was about the cave in from the weight of the ice/snow

There was a bad ice storm in our area back in the sixtys, I believe. I was out for about 8 days. I bought a small (1500) watt generator from Sears. That thing saved my but many times. Just enough to run the sump pump, then the frige, then the freezer, and rigged up a plug on the furnace too.
Just had to get by with bottled water.

Decatur IL is apparently in pretty bad shape power wise. Folks are quickly losing patience with the local electirc utility, and the slow pace at which they seem to be getting everything back up.

I feel like this has been a wake-up call for me. I want to get a small generator to keep emergency power on in the house just in case we ever have a similar outage here.

I was out 8 days a couple of years ago, definitely not into the pioneer spirit here. It was terrible. Cant imagine being out 20.
