1952 Farmall M stuck in gear

We have a 1952 Farmall M - it's stuck in gear heading downhill on a fairly steep slope (in the middle of our driveway!)

Previously, I have been able to get a pry bar into the hole where the gear shift lever is and move it - but this time, it just won't budge.

It will start with the clutch, but won't drive or drift. Any ideas? Thanks.

JB,

Put a jack under the drawbar and lift one side to take the pressure off. Then, align the forks.

Thanks for the added idea - it's a long steep driveway and I know my husband is pondering how to safely pull it down or back up (it's longer going back up.) - Ann

Tell him to be careful; don't want an accident here.

Is the driveway dry? Lock just the left brake and jack up the right side.

If the drive is ice covered, I'd just hook on to 'er and slowly drag it to level ground with the tires "sliding".

Either way, you have to get that gravity pressure off the transmission before it can be "unlocked".

IaGary has told you correctly, the problem and how t fix it..... the reason you cant move the gears is because the pressure on them, because of the down grade ..... .put some up hill pressure on the tractor so you can move the gears.....don

P.S. you might want to add some (1/8")weld to the bottom end of the shifter, grind it to shape.....

Hook something onto it and pull it up the hill a bit to get the pressure off the transmission.

Sounds like its in two gears to me.

Me again. And if it is in two gears the one you think is out of line is in gear the other way.

May need to move all three rails to center position.

Gary again
