Now that the cold weather is here my 2000 Chevy Silverado's tranny is throw fits. If the temp. is below 30 deg. or so it won't shift out of second gear untill the engine is at least half way warmed up or between 160 and 210 on the temp gauge. After that it is fine untill it sits for 3 or 4 hours then it acts up again. I won't have a lot of money to fix it soon so I hope its a cheap fix. I thought about getting a heat magnet to put on the pan as a temporary fix. Anybody experiance problems with these? This truck has the 5.3L engine and the lighter duty trans. Thanks for your help. Mike.

You won't need a heater if you just change over to a synthetic like Amsoil. The difference in cold weather is like night and day! I changed my Ford pick-up over to it when I had similar start-up issues. The problem dissapeared. Save your money. Amsoil makes an synthetic ATF with a pour point rated down to -61 F, and a drain interval of 100k miles!

Hey Mike,
A delayed upshift cold almost certainly doesn`t point toward an internal tranny problem. Get it somewhere where they can do more than just pull codes(chances are there won`t be any). If it were here, the first thing I would do is let it cool down, then hook a scanner up and watch the live data. I`d watch all the inputs that affect shift timing, if everything looks good, which it probably will, I`d haul her down to a GM dealer and ask them to reflash the computer with the latest calibration or if there are any recals that deal with that specific problem. If anything, it`s relatively inexpensive and surely doesn`t hurt anything.
Alot of shift timing problems are calibration issues on these trucks. Trucks in the same model year can have hundreds of different program calibrations. I wouldn`t get into putting anything in the oil. Anymore, with all the eletronics, alot of the additives can really raise heck with things.
Most are highly acidic, or create alot of sludge. Anyway, I wouldn`t get too worried about this being an expensive fix. Hope this helps and let us know if you find the solution to the problem. Brokenwrench

Whew! Boy I hope your right. It sure picked a bad time to act up as money is a little tight right now. Do you have a rough idea what that recalibrating runs I know it probably varies form dealer to dealer but just an idea. Thanks Brokenwrench. Mike.

Dealerships around here charge around $65.00.
It is usually done right on the truck. Kinda like running an update on your PC. Usually takes about a half hour. If you have a dealership with a good service department you might want to have them diagnose it first, just to see what they come up with. Their Tech 2 scanners can retrieve alot more info than just codes. Good Luck Brokenwrench

The first thing to do is read the owner's manual if available then look up TS Bulletin No.: 01-07-30-013A for explaination of trans operation. The owner's manual has a mild description of operation.

And, the post I had below was wrong in the speed's it shifts. Those number's are Kilometers not miles.

Voice of reason???
Try tellin that to my wife!!!
The last tranny school I was at this spring, they spent 2 hrs on all the calibration issues on these things, and about 15 min on actual mechanical problems. To think, it`s all driven by what comes out the tailpipe. Oh well, keeps me busy enough I guess.

Alan, No reverse works fine. Is there any way to turn the delayed shift off?

Mornin' Mike,

Bear with me here a minute.

Does it shift absolutely A-Okay when warm? Nothing out of the ordinary when warm?

I would say good morning but its afternoon now so I guess good afternoon Alan will have to do. Well the tranny shifts at the times its supposed to when its warm but does seem to take a little too long to complete a shift about 2-3 seconds sometimes and other times act just like it's supposed too. Sure has a mind of its own. Mike.

Mike,

When was the last time you put a fuel filter in that truck?

I don't think you have transmission problems at all. I'm like Brokenwrech (we've both been in these things a million times) and think there is something else going on.

A partially clogged fuel filter will just drive a 4L60 or 80 nuts.

However, as a disclaimer, you are getting around the magic “7-year" mark @ 100K miles and the 2-3 shift is the most critical in my view.

If all else fails, I mean if EVERYTHING else fails, pull that pan and see if it shows signs of black "soot" on the bottom. If it does, you need a tranny.

Just don't think so, tho. Think you have a drivability concern here and not a transmission problem at all.

Allan

The chevy does to. At air temps less than 32 degrees and engine temp less than 171 degrees AND less than 37 percent throttle opening the 2-3 shift won't happen until 54 mph. 3-4 shift won't happen until 74 mph. At more than 37 percent of throttle normal shifting returns.

Stop in at a good trans.fix shop, they should have a product you can add to the fluid.....

Ok, I checked the fluid and is is bright red and clean. Smells like it should too. For a little more information I bought the truck in the last part of march of this year with 92,000 miles on it and thats when they serviced it. It now has a little over 98,000 miles on it. When the TPS sensor went bad the tranny shifted very rough and the truck idled at 12-1500 Rpm. I hasn't acted like that since they put the new sensor in it so I would guess its not that.

Check for any codes with scanner first.A bad temp sensor or TPS(throttle pos.)can cause this.
How does the fluid look?Bright pink?If not, change filter and flush.
If the fluid is bright pink, try flushing with synthetic ATF.It will be spendy, but will be worth it.
The 4L60-E is an overall good tranny, but does need to be maintained regularly.

The Tranny was serviced when I bought it as part of the deal. I don't think it was flushed though. And the TPS sensor went out two weeks after I bought it and they replaced it free of charge. As for the scanner I don't have one but I think autozone has them to check vehicles with. Can anyone confirm that for me?

A.Z can read the code for you. They may give you a "generic" code as the codes are universal.Let me know.
Just so we know, what does the fluid look like?
