My tractor has a noise coming from the engine. It isn"t really loud but noticable. It is coming from both sides on the engine at first, and the once it get really hot, it is mostly heard from the camshaft side. What is this sound coming from.

Can you post an audio link? Just kiddin. In general a crank speed thump is at engine RPM an cam[valve train] noise is half that speed. There is no way to analyze a noise by telephone or verbal description as far as I know. The way to fix that in an old car was to turn up the radio louder.Or if your a used car dealer add some sawdust to the oilpan. Not what you want to hear. They have a mechanics stethescope in most auto parts store to locate better.

We don't know what were not able to hear. Any help at all will need to come after you tell us what tractor it is what model/year, condition, ambient temperature, type of oil, number of hours, and what it sounds like. I am not being difficult. To respond to the question without more info would be best done by saying find a good mechanic and have it listened to on site. Good luck, help us help you. JimN

It is a early model VAC Case. I don't know what type of oil is in it. It is a low tone coming from the lower half of the block. It is not any lowder from the first second of start up to a minuet later. It is just after it is run around for a while that it really quiets down to where it is only heard lightly on the cam side. It really doesn't matter what the starting temperature is.

If you dont know what oil is in it now you could start with an oil change using the recommended oil. Then monitor the oil pressure. As a rod bearing wears it will show some drop in pressure. You can sometimes go for a good while with a rod knocking but if it lets loose it can break the block or pan.It could also be the small end of a rod which is not as threatning. As an experiment you could also try a can of STP or Wynns [doesnt fix anything but may keep the noise down].One thing that does go away with warm up is piston slap which is also not realy going to cause damage.Hard to say without hearing it.Watch the oil pressure.
