I now own about 50 acres of fertile bottom ground I want to start farming it. This is all pretty new to me but I've got it in my blood and love doing it. I've got a JD 3020 and a few pieces of equipment to work with (tandem disc, chisel plow, drill, shreader etc.) I actually disc plowed and planted about 10 of those acres with a milo/red top cane mix for the wildlife during the spring and now have a really nice hay crop but it also has lots of weeds. Then in September I shreaded and plowed another 2-3 acres around the edge and planted wheat for the deer. The wheat also looks great. Now I see the potential and need some advice. First off the rest of the ground is grown up in 2-3' tall weeds. I can see the weeds will be my biggest challenge. How would you suggest I proceed in order to put the rest of it in hay next spring? Burning may be an option but otherwise what would you suggest. I figure I will need to put together some type of spray rig too during the winter. If I buy/build a 3 pt rig, how big of a tank can I use on the backside of the 3020 and how wide of a boom to use. I realize my questions are general and not real specific but any advice will be appreciated. I just like about another week having my 80 acres fenced and will move my dad's few cows over for the winter to clean up the hay and graze the 30 acres of pasture. Thanks
Tom

From my limited experience, burning a field does nothing to control weeds. Mowing the field will choke out the majority of weeds and spraying in early spring will take out the rest. Contact your local Coop for specifics on what you need and the best time of year to spray. I waited until March last year and the Coop wouldn't spray it, said it needed to be done in February...so I mowed all summer. : -)

My farm was the same way a few years back, I just mowed it the first year about like you would a lawn,I mowed the grass about six inches tall, and it choked out 99% of the weeds, in the fall the ground I wanted to row crop I plowed under and let it winter mellow. It worked for me, enjoy your endevours it truely is a wonderful life....

well congradts on your 3020 since its green and yellow it will pull anything but i would recomend something that isnt to huge since your doing this for a hobby more or less i would recomend about a 60 or 80 gallon sprayer on boom sizes thats all personal preference but i would go with about a 20ft if your not messing around trees do not plow until you spray you will cover up the seeds the best time to spray i think is in the spring so the seeds have less cover.
