Help please, just purchased a beautiful, fully restored Farmall M; it runs perfectly and looks gorgeous, but while I'm waiting for my manual to arrive no one around these parts can agree where to add the oil, what type of engine oil is best, what antifreeze to use, small stuff but real important to me. Any advice out there? Thank you, Craig of Green Acres

Hi ! Congrat's on the M ! Some other pointers till your book gets to you . The oil check petcocks are on the side of the oil pan , you want oil to just drip out of the upper one so when you get a good stream of oil out of the lower one while you are filling close it and continue adding oil very slowly till it drips out the top one . A subject that is covered extinsively on the IH forum is leaking oil filter housings . If you change filters make absolutely sure that ALL old o-ring gaskets are removed from the base with a dental pick or small screw driver . Dig in there hard unless you are sure that the restoration was done perfectly . It took me about a half hour of scraping to get all the gasket out of mine it was so hard ! Don't worry , you won't hurt the cast base with a screwdriver or pick . Another point to check is just loosen the final drive oil drain located below the pto shaft , don't remove it so hold on to it as you loosen it up to check for condensation water in the gear oil . This should be done regularly before you operate it after it's sat for a few days . If you get a milky oil out of it then let it sit for as long as possible ( days or even weeks ) and try it again , hopefully the water will seperate from the oil . Otherwise change it ($$$) . 13 gallons of gear lube is what it takes , the book calls for 90w but I think 80w-90 works OK in mine . Look into the drain hole after it's all out with a flashlight and see if there are any chunks of gook in there . It's probably grease chunks from over greasing the axles but try and remove as much as possible anyway with a wire . The final drive and trany filler hole is the big plug under your right foot when you are sitting on the seat . Don't forget to grease the axle ends every couple of uses with a pump or two of grease . Fun tractors and not very high tech . Take care ...Randy

well congradts on your purchase now for the oil there are plenty of pictures on the net. i would most likely drain it all out and put new in now for the antifreeze green is the best it will mix with other types. if you have any questions you can email me at Penyacolatas@aol.com

Craig,

Right front of the motor there is a spin on cap on top of the front timing gear area. Pour your oil in there.

Green anti-freeze; your choice on the oil.
