Does anyone know of a website that lists the engines used in various tractors? At the moment I trying to find out whose engines are in the early oliver 6cyl tractors as well as the old Co-ops but also just like to educate myself a litle more about all of them, I know alot tractor companies made there own most of the time but used cont, hercs, chryslers, etc in some applications just wondering if theres a site that would list the bulk of old tractor engines specs...

Fill us in a little (Hotlines' website is not the easiest to decipher): Sounds like an annual guide (other than the antique etc ones)? The sample spec on a JD doesn't show engine model #(the Holy Grail for us engine weirdos). Do the antique etc sets (1960 to date) just show engine make or engine make and model?? (Heard about the guides, understood did NOT show engine model #'s). Any comments appreciated; many thxx!

If there is such a site I haven't found it, nor have I seen a reference to one...the parts catalogs are the easiest to use that I've found, although (just like the truck and tractor reference books) they don't always agree, and all are incomplete. The Nebraska tests are OK if you just want engine maker, but no good if you want engine model(at least as far as the online and published copies I've found)and they're not helpful as to the special arrangements per Old's and jdemaris' posts above. If you get away from over-the-road trucks and most plowing tractors, into industrial and Ag eqpmt, it's a jungle.
Email and I'll fill you in on the CO-OPs...kinda...sorta...more or less...

The co-ops that are re-badged cockshutts may be buda (30) or continental(20).

The spelling will not be right but Oilver used walk-a-shaw engines in a good number of there tractors like the 77, and 88s. They also used hercules engines in there cletrac/oliver crawlers.

several companies use engines of their own design but built by others....

Oliver used waukesha, continental and hercules that way Massey used Continental (and later baught out right perkins) Case IH 's engines today are not Cumminns but built by cummins some took off the shelf engines. Cockshutt just took engines off the shelf from Budda,Continental, hercules, and perkins Co-op's and others used off the shelf chryslers

I'd like to have access to such a list myself. The closest I've seen is the engine-parts catalogs most automotive machines-shops have. Look up and car, truck, tractor, etc. and it will give a list of the various engines used, and usually who made them. Also - books like Wendel's Standard Catalog of Farm Tractors is a great resource - perhaps not perfect - but still very good. With some engines, there's some "grey area" as to who should get credit for the engine. Allis Chalmers for one - they got in a feud with Detroit Diesel, and wound up buying the Buda engine company and using Buda engines -often referring to them as Allis engines. Deere used the the Hercules two-cylinder, and later copied and modified it and called it their own. IH used several Indian Mahindra engines -yet they are usually considered IH engines. IH used some Mazdas also. I suspect that sort of thing happened a lot. In regard to CO-OPs, and I'm no expert by any means, all the ones I've seen had Chrysler engines. In regard to Oliver - again I'm no expert. But - I thought they designed their own sixes starting in the 1930s and they had hoped they would execel due to the unusually high compression ratio used.

I don't know of a wwebsite, but you might try looking them up in CH Wendel's book on Nebraska Tractor Testing. I think each test describes te tractor, type of engine, and fuel used.

Might be a step in the right direction.
