Over a month ago my Ford 2000 gas 3 cyl. tractor quit on me. So far rebuilt carb, new selenoid, new coil, drained gas tank and cleaned sediment bowl. What I need to do now is replace plugs, wires, points, condensor, rotor cap. Now my problem. Took off distributor cap and rotor. I can't get to the points because the dust cover won't come off. Everyone tells me it should just lift out if you pull on it. Tried to pry it off with a screw driver, tap on it but it will not come off. There is a metal ring around the top of the cover. Second problem, I didn't mark the plug wires, now I don't know which goes where. Firing order is 1 2 3 and the rotor turns counter clockwise. There is a one on the rotor cap. And lastly I need to know the gap for the points and plugs. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. Not to many warm days left so I want to get it going asap.

Brian, I don't know for sure about the dust cover. But you can find the specs you need by clicking on the "Tune up Guide" link at the left edge of this web page. Be sure to check your timing while you're at it. There is a small metal tab on the block. It's held on by one screw and it covers the window for the timing marks on the flywheel. I don't remember which side it's on, but it should be easy to find. Be sure to disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor when you check the timing, too. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

I had a similar problem with a 640 remove the rotor and look at the flat alignment on the shaft.Ford for some reason put a rotor spring, this clips around the shaft and a tab points up to make the rotor fit if not installed the rotor will have 1 in slop. To remove take a sharp blade and pry away from the shaft then pull up it wont break and cost me 6 bucks for a new one.

Jake, I don't see any flat area on the shaft. Nor do I see any springs or clips. All I see is the rotor shaft coming up through the dust cover. Shaft has an cut or opening in the side of it. Looking inside rotor shaft it looks like something black and soft.
I'm about to take a sludge hammer to it. Talk about frustrating. Thanks

I don"t know much about your model so I can"t help with specifics on getting the dust cap off.

As far as the firing order goes, if you"re sure that the correct order is 1,2,3 then all you have to do is place the wire for plug number 1 at the spot on the cap that is marked with a one. You then just follow the order of rotation with the other plug wires in the order they fire.

I assume you don"t have a service manual if you"re asking about the point and plug gaps. Hopefully somebody else with a manual or knowledge on that model can give you the numbers.
