I just put a Saginaw 3pt on my Super M, and no matter how tight I get the fittings a few of them leak.
What do you fellas use on the threads to reduce leakage under pressure?

Thanks,
RoninKS

I use teflon tape on plumbing of any kind, unless I'm working with brass. Brass you usually will get to stop leaking just by tightening. Anything else, taped here.

loctite makes a hydraulic sealant #545. it is made for hydraulic statems and will not harm the fluid or pump. i use it on all the fittings, put a few drops on the threads and you are good to go.

I like the aviation permatex myself. Brush it on the threads and let it set about 30 minutes and you are good to go.

My dad used to sell heavy duty hydraulic mowers for tractors. The instructions for mounting said to use teflon tape only and not pipe sealant. These machines operated continuously at 3000 psi and high flow rates around 30 gpm'. One note, teflon tape is for pipe thread only. O-ring or JIC flare fittings shouldn't need any sealant. Make sure to wrap it opposite the way it threads on so it doesn't unwrap and keep it back a thread or two and you shouldn't have any problems. I've never heard of teflon tape plugging hydraulics unless there was a lot of it in there. Just my experience. Dave

Teflon tape is just fine, so long as you wrap it around the male part, keeping it back 2 or 3 threads, so there is no chance of the teflon getting inside the system.

THIS:

...is even better. Use it on clean, undamaged pipe threads, and properly tighten them, and you'll have NO leaks, EVER.

If you're too "tight" (just kidding) to spring for this size, I think they make it in small tubes, also, but I don't have the part number at hand.

DON'T ues the tape or you will be sorry. Its just how hyds are. Figure that you have 2000-3000 PSI on them fitting so they will leak a little no matter what unless you can weld them up which you don't want to do. Shoot even the Milatary figure on leaks thats why they have bilg pumps etc.

I never did like teflon tape on steel fittings, I know alot of people use it. I use permatex aviation gasket saler. I found the trouble with teflon tape is, if the threads are a bit ragged it tears the tape, and doesn't seal. Teflon tape works good on pvc fittings. Stan

Did you use teflon tape on them? If not get some (Like 50 cents a roll) and wind it on the opposite way of the threads so when you tighten the fittings it doesn't get squeezed out. If you wind it the wrong way you will know it pretty quick, just go the other way.

Thanks, I've got teflon tape on hand. The reason I didn't use it when putting everthing together was, I had heard somewhere that by using teflon tape there is a risk of pieces of tape plugging the screen to the pump. I don't know as though the hydraulic system on a Super M has such a "screen" but I didn't want to chance the risk.

If others have successfully used teflon tape on their hydraulic systems, then I'll give it a try also.

Thanks,
RoninKS

Take a look at the fittings you are using where the leaks occurred, make sure you aren't trying to fit a flare fitting to a pipe fitting or o-ring fitting....

Flare fittings self seal, they have an angled surface on the male and female end to seal up with. O-ring fittings have o-rings, obviously.

Pipe thread fittings require some sort of thread sealant, as already mentioned.
