We breed Walkers. If a mare produces real nice colts I'll breed her till she "won't take" any more. I've seen some mares that do well on into their 20's.
Seems to me that Mother Nature works well in this dept. Mares that are too old, too thin, too fat, or in general poor condition just won't concieve.

Usually around 20 is when most people stop. If her legs are clean and her back is up and tight still that is usually some good indicator if she is sound enough to carry a foal ok.

We bought a regestered Quarter horse mare that was 36 years and bred to a champion cutting horse. She had the foal with no problem (a stud) and raised it well, but we never bred her back, I guess dad felt sorry for her because she was still in good shape.

Depends on how good a shape the mare is in and how many she has had. I've heard of them being bred till they where around 25 or so but then they also have to be in good shape and well taken care of. Also depends on the breed that they are some do well when older and some don't. See my/wifes web sate for more info
