Hello Allen, I would like to ask you how long and how hard of a job was it to replace the hydraulic pump on your 966?.

Hi Jon,

If you're talking about that rear pump, took me somewhere around 4 or 5 hours of heavy procrastination and 30 minutes of actual work. :>)

The pump down near the rear axle, the main tractor pump. Looking at one for my 484, they want $475 for the pump, but I was wondering weither I should pay to have the dealer replace it. So there must just be a few bolts holding the thing in?. I am pretty sure it is the pump thats ailing it now, I had my local dealer go in and clean the screens all out on it, replaced the oil and filter and it still runs into problems with the 3pt and steering failing to work right while the hydraulic pto is in engaged, and the greater the load on the pto, the worse it gets on the 3pt and steering, but the pto apparently gets priority because it doesn't slow down or slop, but the steering will act starved for oil and the 3pt gets slow and jerky, or just doesn't work at all. I've been trying to do some brush hogging with it and its being a pain and getting worse, so I got to do something. The dealer said those screens were so plugged up when he cleaned them that it was a wonder that it worked at all, full of brake band debris. Does this sound like the pump or do you think maybe they missed some of the trash when they cleaned out the rear end and the screens are plugging up again?.

Doggone it,

I wish I could give you better advice, but I've just never been around a utility tractor; just the row crops.

However, doesn't the PTO have it's own pump that is completely separate from the rest of the hydraulic system? That's the way the big tractors are anyway.

Just don't know. Sorry,

Allan

I think you might be right about the pto having it's own pump come to think of it, hmmm, so, why does it only bother when the pto is engaged?, the steering and the 3pt. Maybe those screens are plugged again?. I think there isn't much difference between the rowcrops and the utilitys here, but I could be wrong.

Jon,

The hardest part is pouring all that oil back in.

I use air wrenches and I think it took a total of 3 minutes and I had that sucker out of the tractor.

You have to be careful with the pickup tube; pull it out of the pump and place it in the tractor first before reassembling the pump to the tractor.

I thought I'd ask you since from the outside, those pictures you posted of your 966, it looks exactly the same on this 484, but I am sure the flow rate must be lower.
