I have a 74 Ford 2000 right now. It has the 35hp 3 cyl Gas engine. She does a pretty good job around the Little Farm. She's a bit lite to move big bales of Hay though. I have the front tires filled with water, But that just not quite enough. I'm looking at a 1987 Massey 250 with a rebuilt 3cyl. Perkins Diesel. I think this tractor is almost 1000 lbs heavier, So I'm thinking it can handle the bigger bales easier.

Which tractor is Better?

All this discussion and I come home with a Eicher 485 with a frontend loader. The Massey couldn't lift my bales and they didn't have a weight bar for it. So I ended up with a used (260 hours) Eicher. 51 HP Air cooled diesel. I hope this aint a Piece of Crap.
It moved all the bales,,,, No Problem. and also mowed and knocked down a dead pecan tree. So far so good. Thanks for all the help

Tom

You need both!! I have a 74 Ford 2000 gas. I use for brush hogging, discing, and straw blowing. I have a 1988 Massey 240 loader tractor for the heavier jobs, loader and fork work, heavy hogging etc. There a matched pair I couldn't do without. dave

I've got a '74 3000 Ford diesel, had a '72 Ford 3000 gasser for 34 years, and have a '71 MF 150. Owned it since new The 250 was a further developement of the Ferguson F-40/MF 50/MF 150/MF 245 family. It uses the Perkins AD152-3 engine. It is probably the most fuel efficient engine of its kind. It runs virtually forever, and isn't straining to do what it does. (I've got my 150 turned up to 47 PTO HP. Been that way since 1975) It's still a fuel mizer. The 250 has all the things that made the 150 great plus a little more (wet brakes being one)

All in all, the 150 will hold its own against a 3000 and do it with less fuel. I'd say both are great small utility tractors.

The 3000 has a lot more going for it than a 2000. The 250 is a better tractor than a 150, PLUS it's newer.

I'd jump on the 250.

Look around the front of the Ford. There should be some where to hang a weight bracket, like where the bumpers bolt to the front axle.
3 or 4 hundred pounds of suitcase weights should be cheaper than trading tractors.
I'm partial to the Fords too.

I go to tractor data . com for info. They show the ford 2000 at 3615 # and the Massey at 4600 #. IMHO the 3 cylinder is a great motor.

I am a little partial to the Ford line, but you will save money on fuel switching to the MF.

Yea , fuel is one of my concerns. My gas goes bad before I can use it all up. I would fill that Diesel up twice a year. I like my Ford if I could get some weight up front so My cow Partner didn't have to ride on the hood to feed the cows. I do how ever like the Power steering on the Massey and the fact that the PTO has it's own clutch. Its nice having the Shreader keep shreading when I have to stop and back the tractor. The massey has some things I like, (powersteering, Two stage clutch, Diesel) But my ford is paid for.

Looking through a book of Nebraska tests that I have, it would appear that the massey is 430 odd pounds heavier. I believe that is an "as tested" weight, which means that it is ballasted in the manner that the manufacture chose to ballast the tractor for the test..... so the massey may have been ballasted, and the Ford not, or the other way around... I doubt there's much real difference in the capabilities of those two tractors although the Massey has a bit more power. Where the weight is placed is quite important in how it handles a heavy load like a bale. Truth be told, both are rather light for handling bales without quite a bit of front weight. I don't think I'd trade unless I really wanted the diesel either.... but I am more partial to Ford. HTH.
