As one who works for a friend with a pick your own operation, i often hear folks saying they expect p-y-o to be cheaper, after all-your doing the work!! Unfortunately what happens is the public has no idea how to pick apples. When a farmer picks he may drop one or two apples for every bushel box (40lbs) he gets. But when the public picks they drop 4 or 5 apples for every 1 apple they pick. I've have personally witnessed 50% of a crop ending up on the ground and have heard people say "Its too green, its too big, its too small, it had a spider on it, it has a hole (no, thats called the STEM !!) etc etc etc. Not to mention i've personally witnessed a 60 year old 200 lb man attempt to climb a 5 yr old tree with a 2" diameter trunk...and break the tree off at the base, limbs broken, tree stakes ripped out of the ground and used to beat the livin sh%t out of a tree, apples dumped into an irrigation pump inlet pipe, attempts to "double dip" (empty the bag out in the car and return for more as if you already paid), loading up a kid's wagon - spreading a blanket over the additional 40 lbs of apples and attempt to sneak out, etc etc. We were nieve enough to charge 0.99/lb for one year and have since had to go to 1.60/lb in order to turn a profit. So, next time you complain about the price (lets not forget the cost of labor, feul and spray that the farmer incurs as well), think about it for a moment. If your still unhappy then get your months old crappy apples from your generic big box store guy.
