Well i just finished a rough week! My 90 year old Great Aunt Mary, finally agreed to move in with my Mom and Dad. She had been married 3 times in her life and widowed each time and NEVER had any children. My Great Uncle Stan passed on about 13yrs. ago and she has been doing ok, with frequent visits from us. The worst part was cleaning out the house. OH MY GOD, 12 pick-up truck loads, 2 30 foot enclosed trailers, and a 15 foot moving van!, and I have 1 pick-up load left! She never thew out anything, a dresser in the basement had one drawer filled to the top with used bread bag ties. Someone would give a gift of like a blender or toaster, it would be still in the origional box NEVER used. And that wount be so bad but there were 7 blenders and 8 toasters brand new next to them. I hauled one pick-up load of just unused appliances, and dishes in their original boxes some from the 40s 50s, a unused 1930s singer sewing machine with the cord still tied, a 1940 gas range in white porclean and chrome unused. Well next Saturday we are having on heck of an estate sale.

Yeah, thanks to my brother who cleaned out grandma's house after she passed (he lives there and lived with her for atleast 4 years before she passed) the town now has a restriction on how much garbage can be on the curb in a given week.

They had to run the compactor atleast 3 times for each stop for about a month, coming once a week. They really started getting mad and started taking the garbage cans too....

Just this year we cleaned out the grainery of the shed, not too much other than old bed frames, door frames, chicken stuff, and lots of old chicken sh!t. He had the poultry upstairs for a while but never cleaned the floor afterwards.

Made a heck of a bonfire.

One thing to remember is that she went through the depression. Many older folks who went through that time could not bring themselves to throw anything out. I know much younger folks who grew up in poverty that would be considered "Hoarders" now. A little understanding for them. Bob

Man, I could tell you horror stories about the stuff that was in my wife's Grandparents house! NOTHING was thrown awy! Boxes of BOXES, empty film canisters, tire valvestem caps, hair they cut from the kids and kept, shoelaces, nylons, scraps of cloth, 9 gazillion nails and screws, when they needed a 7 1/2' 2x4, they saved the 6" that was left, old socks (one would wear out, kept the other), walnut shells, bobby pins, popsicle sticks, found jars of canned stuff in the basement that was canned in the 40's, I could go on for hours. Took us 6 20 yard dumpsters and 2 10 yarders to get rid of the trash before we even GOT to the good stuff!

I agree don't sell at yard sale. E-bay it. That stuff is worth a fortune especially unused.

Some of those things might be worth quite a bit, being unused, in the boxes. The older stuff from the 40's, especially. It might be worth doing some checking, before you sell... That Range might bring big bucks to a collecror...

I agree, take it to some antique dealers. Don't take the first offer, you can always come back if they are the hightest bidder. Try ebay with one item first to guage the market. New in box always does well. Don't want to flood the market with to many at once. You hurt your price if you do.

My family has the task of cleaning out my grandparents house pretty soon, theirs isn't going to be quite as bad as the one you describe, but they did have quite a bit of accumulation, especially the upstairs floor of the house and in their old barn, but I know there isn't much thats going to be new and unused. The good news is, probably 90% of whats in the barn is pure junk, so sorting and getting getting rid of that stuff will be easy but the rest of it?. Thought about getting an auctioneer, but about the only fellow who does estate auctions around here pratically gives everything away at his auctions, he never gets good prices so possibly we might go the huge lawnsale route.
