Mornin' All,

Finally got started on gettin' my nurse crop pulled off the new alfalfa yesterday.

The darned draught sure did a dance on me 'cause the oat crop could be described as nothing less than pathetic, but the good news is that we ended up with a really sweet stand on the alfalfa, which was the original goal anyway and that somewhat ancient ol' combine just purrs like a kitten. :>)

Yea the auger you using in my area is basically a truck auger used to unload bins with not fill them. You can get all kinds of augers in the 6 and eight inche range 50ft long or better for little bit of nothing. Just no demand unless they are ten inch units or larger in diameter. Bins in picture of that size would not be used just tyo little, they all smashed and buried. Just way differnt in my area,as for a s more trucks yea benn ther done that but just get helper and you will gain same thign for day or too and be alot vheaper then upkeeping more grain trucks, license and inspections now days. Can you even sell the oats in your area and make a profit or are you feeding it to the hay burners.

Don't know if you realize it or not but, by your respones you are slamming the smaller part time guys that are mostly farming for the fun of it.

Don't know if Allan will responed or not but not every one has the need for the larger equipment that is used here in eastern Ia.

They enjoy their small bins, small tractors and equipment.

I also bet alot of them don't pay 4000 an acre for land either. So they don't need 100 bu oats and 200 bu corn.

I'm not trying to be harsh but just think about what you say before you say it. You might save some hurt feelings.

Thanks Gary

No not making fun anyone just way things are different in different areas. If it works for that fine have no problenm with that but all I mean't was and you will have to agreed the uger in his picture is what is used for truck auger sizes around here. Thats all I don't care if he farms with horses if that what he enjoys. He just stated auger had to go and you can get larger unuits in this are for little to nothing

When I was a boy, there was no such thing as augers and I remember that itchy, dirty job of unloading with the then heavy, steel scoop shovels. Later, the aluminum scoops showed up and I wanna tell ya, that was heaven!

So, even tho this one is whimpy, it is light years ahead of that chore, that's fer sure! :>)

Morning Allan; Boy those pictures make me want to head to ND. Been combining for a friend there each fall. Cut way back this year and the dry got him too. Said he will run just the one combine and uses The ministers son for help. Nice young man of 14 that is just yearning to be a rancher.
Is tht the drop side truck you bought? Seems to hold the grain ok, what did you do to the corners? Have fun-- Bob

Hi Ya Bob,

Yeah, I never did get around to rebuilding that box like I wanted and was really worried about it. So, I caulked around the "hinges" at the bottom of the sides and the way it is designed, that beet box holds grain just fine.

The only thing I've noticed is that I'm gonna need another truck before wheat harvest next year. This one only holds a little over 300 bushel and I just can't keep the grain away from the combine fast enough.

When I was farming before, I had two straight trucks and a tandem. Worked just right hauling away from this sized machine when it was blowing black smoke.

Allan; Sure you may have thought of this but what about a grain wagon to tow behind one of the tractors or even this truck? Some of the older ones go reasonable at auctions. Bob

Combine can stay, no problems there. But, that little auger just has to go live somewhere else; too derned short and not the quickest beast in the west. :>)

We lucked out Saturday night as well with about 1.5" of rain. First we've had for 6 weeks. Will probably help the pastures, but everything else shows a lot of stress. Even the irrigated corn is starting to show tipping.

Howard:
I will ask the Lord to bless you
And make you better really quick
We need to hear that cleaver wit
For you're one idol we would pick.

When you're not here to help us
The cows might just forget to moo
Without you here to cheer us on
There isn't much of anything to do.

It will be a lonesome faced crew
That's lost without their guide
We'll be here and miss the Cowman Like boys without a puppy at their side.

God Bless and hurry back!

(Allan: If I didn't know better, I'd think there were still green plates on that truck.☺)

No Sir,

Went out and made one round Saturday morning. Sprinkled and stopped me cold. Rain lasted just long enough for me to get the combine tarped and then it just sort of petered out and turned into a cold wind.

PS Howard. If you need anything at all while you're doin' your mending, please don't be shy about asking.

Wife and I have really been thinking about you for the past few days as my step dad just had that procedure done 10 days ago. It's gonna take you a few days before you can crawl back up in the saddle.

Well Allan did the oats clean up as far as the green stuff goes?

Bet you can move along faster now also.

And the auger problem, we had an older auger on hydraulic drive years ago and it had to go down the road. To slow.

Couple of years ago I bought a 8" auger with a hydraulic drive swing hopper. I should have knowin better after that auger years ago because it was slow also.

It's gone also.

Hi Gary,

Yeah, it cleaned up pretty darned nice; still just a touch of weed seed that's dry and I'll bump up the air a little today to take care of that too.

Knew better on the auger when I bought it, but I was running out of daylight, it was the only one I could find in a hurry and does beat the end of a scoop shovel. :>)

Hi Allan,

You have any pics of cutting the oats? I've never seen how the head processes the oats and it would be of interest.

Have you thought about changing the hydraulic drive on the auger to a gear box and PTO ? Cost effective? Probably not.
