Just bought a Caprice with custom exhaust. It's got dual pipes, no cats, and glasspacks about halfway back. On the left side, at the very rear, the pipe comes within about an inch from the plastic fuel tank for a span of about four inches. No heat sheild. Should I worry about this? As best as I can tell the tank doesn't get hot, but I don't want to get blowed up. I just can't see a good way to fabricate a heat shield. Is there some sort of thin insulation I could wrap around the pipe?

I don't think you have a problem. The exhaust has cooled alot when it gets back there. I have the same situation on my street rod. I cut a piece of the bubble insulation with foil on both sides and used weatherstrip adheasive to glue it to the tank, painted it black. It's been there 11 years through some 11 hour driving days with never a problem.

Go to www.summitracing.com and search for exhaust wrap. It is meant for insulating headers but should work good for what you want.
