I am considering buying a IH Hydro tractor either a 656 or something a little larger like a Hydro 100. What are the pros and cons? Good idea or bad? I like that style tractor and the smoothness of hydro. What do you think??? Thanks

Had a 656 gas hydro and it was a gas hog. Good for baling and lighter work. No good for heavy field work. Also found it was no good for running a field chopper pulling a box of sileage. Heavy costs when the unit goes too.
So for me, had one but not another on my mind.

I owned a IH 544 Hydro with a loader, Boy did it take the gas, and not much good for anything else, from what I could tell, it's real hard to adjust the power you want for what your doing, for my money, I'd stay away from them unless your eager for problems... my 2 cents...

Depends what you want to do.

They simpley take more maintenence, more $$$ for repairs. Just how it is. No getting around that.

They are much less fuel efficient. They do _not_ make a good plowing tractor. ;)

Given those negatives, for loader work, tile trenching, baling, mowing hay, they are the cat's meow. If infanite speed control is useful, they are great.
