Whew!

Been dodgin" timber fires since 3 this afternoon. Darned thing is just over the ridge to the east, we"ve lost all power and I"m on the generator and a laptop on the phone line.

Guess all the neighbors around us have left "cause the highway patrol told "em to get out.

I"m going to stay here and up all night and keep an eye that bugger. So far, it is staying on the other side of the ridge. If the wind switches, we"re in trouble.

Biggest darned mess I"ve ever seen and it"s burned all the way into town, a distance of 10 miles. Last I heard, they were evacuating the town too. Many, many homes lost already, I"m sure.

Allan

Allan:
I would have thought you"d have, among all that equipment, a couple of C-130 Hercules, with your own installed water tanks!

Stay safe.

That's a bad one. I know you will stay ahead of the fire. Don't go and get all worked up and have a hart attack or something, we are not as young as we would like to be. Will keep you folkes in my prayers. Stan

Wow!! and Yikes!! Talk about being ready to run. It's hot and dry enough right now for this sort of thing to happen a lot of places. Suddenly a lot of other things don't matter. Good luck!! This is one time when you definitely need rain .

Just wondering if someone out there can help me to identify the tractor I have. I think it's a 9N but aren't sure. Looks like some of the pictures I've seen but want to be sure before I order a new radiatior. Specifics, looks like a 9N, left brake and clutch, right brake, PTO, 3 speed with reverse. Wondering where I can find the serial number? Thanks for any help. GLC

Got a call from my daughter last night- she's on a helicopter firefighting crew, spent the last 9 days at a forest fire near Omak, in northeastern Washington. Said they spent most of the time playing cards in the shade- seems that they have new rules now, and state crews (hers) can't fight fires on federal lands, and vice versa. They're worried about who is paying who. They used to help each other, and it pretty much balanced out. But both groups have to be there, of course, because state lands and fed lands are interspersed, and you never know when its going to jump over the line. There's another good thing the bureaucrats have managed to screw up.

Sorry to hear about your situation- good luck, and heads up!

This one is a nasty little bugger.

We hauled livestock all yesterday afternoon til dark to help relocate peoples' stock in the path of this devil out to our farm just to get 'em out of harms way. At 11pm, folks were just throwing the gates open and letting them go.

Huge area without electricity and water. We're still on the generators here; they've called in crews from as far away as North Platte. Saw many, many lines on fire last night. Fire front was 10 miles long at that point.

They've emptied all the old folks homes and hospitals to other towns.

Maybe disc or chisel plow a couple of passes all the way around your perimeter as a fire break.

Probably equally important is policing around the buildings -- dry grass, leaves built up around the buildings; make sure eaves are covered with wire cloth to keep embers from blowing in; similiar with porches and decks so embers don't get accumulated debris going under them.

I can't tell someone when it's time for them to go or not without seeing the conditions...but without fire breaks, and without cleaning debris away from the house you're fighting a losing battle.

You be very careful, fires are nothing to be messed with. The tractors and equip. and cattle can be replaced. I"ll pray that the fires die down and they will not even get close to you. But..... .be careful.

Allan, you've got me concerned for you and the missus safety. I'd do the same as you as I'm samewhat of a risk taker [farmer part time] though I'd send the girls away to a safe place. Out in California the ones that ride out the fires do so by keeping their roofs wet. If You're on a well it might be a good time to rig the pump up to your generator. You've probably already thought of this though. I've been reading your posts and enjoy your pictures. Maybe sometime I'll learn how to post pictures. Be very carefull and keep us posted. Jim
