Started about 2 years ago getting rid of all my gas burners and going to diesels which cut consumption on same HP machines 2/3rds Only gas burner that will be left on the farm are the really old antiques. So now I'm spending about the same $$$ on fuel as I was when gas was $1/gal. Best machine I have on fuel is my Yanmar YM 330 I use to rake hay and general all around use which burns a little over a qt of diesel an hour.
Even the 1650 Oliver diesel uses only about 1 gal/hr pulling a New Holland 851 baler. Gas burners are now musem pieces as far as I'm concerned with high energy costs what they are we just have to adapt to the situation as Americans have always done.

$3.98 Re: Gas prices you know it bad when in reply to old, 07-28-2006 20:39:20
$3.98 US per US gallon here for 87 octane. Kind of hurts to fill the truck tank 2-3 times per day while hauling the trailer on holidays. Crossing the border tomorrow to climb Mt Washington

I've got a buddy that owns a pawn shop..He says most pawned items come from contractors or workers that can't keep their heads out of the bottle..Most come in with either " bloodshot" eyes or "glassie" eyes..He holds their stuff in the back anticipating the final outcome..Real sad when you pay retail and settle for pennies on the dollar..

Yep , it's bad when it take ten bucks to get less then a buck got ya back 34years ago . I can remember back in 77 i would leave the house on monday morning with three hundred buck in my pocket suite case in hand and run the big truck all week eat three meals a day partty with the other drivers three of the five day out feed the big truck pay for any flat repaire turnpike tolls and come home with money left over. And never pull and advance off a load. Now today if your going to play the run the roads game when ya leave on monday ya had better have over three grand in your pocket and still may have to take a drag on a load to get home.

Today, my local station was posting diesel fuel for only $3.25. I don't know what to do, except stop driving unless it is absolutely necessary.

Not meaning to start another war, but when you hear oil companies like Mobil-Exxon posting the second highest quarterly profits EVER for ANYONE, the "supply and demand" thing gets weaker every day. Here in SE NEbraska it's $2.98 for the cheap stuff. Took over $80 to fill the tank in one car and the pickup is on fumes. I MIGHT be able to scrounge up enough cash to put 1/4 tank in it. Ain't even gonna THINK about mowing ANYTHING anymore. Yer right, Cowman - it's VERY tough on someone with a fixed income - I can attest to that.

Well ya, And heating oil season is coming up fast. A guy on a fixed income is gonna have to cut back somehow to make the $ go round.

Fixed Income in reply to Mike M, 07-29-2006 06:14:58
Yeah, the fixed income people realy got it rough. From what I can see,the elderly and truely disabled have it rough. The rest of the so called fixed income people retired early,or fooled the system. Many people all over the country took early retirements at young ages.Left companies with big severance pays,Blew the money, and now cry broke and fixed income. They have a mental block which prevents them from going to work.It goes something like this; "I'm not going to work,I'm retired".Everyone should be in thier shoes.Guaranteed income and medical for most. What a boost they just got in life.Yet most set back and do nothing. The permanent disability people, once on it,play more than anyone.

I already knew it was happening, have a friend that owns a pawn shop and hes been telling me about it for weeks. I just thought it was sort of funny how it was on the news tonight. I'll bet things will get a lot worse before it gets better. But it is bad when it cost $50 for 17 gallions of gas.

Probably they can only put prices on the pump so high. Doubt they forseen 9.999 when the put the wheels on them. That or just the psycological effect. Bad news for all of us anyhow. Maybe we need to invest in methane conversion and get more out of the cow critters than ferilizer. lol Bob

Our diesel price is around £1.03 ($1.56)a litre or £5.15 ($$7.80) a gallon. Costs me about £70.00 ($109.20) to fill my car.

A lot of this is tax. We pay a fuel tax and Value Added tax on the fuel tax.

Even with all the tax though, Royal Dutch Shell have just posted profits of £1.7 million per HOUR. Thats $265,200,000, according to my calculator per HOUR. The best profits the company has made for years.

Wonder why our government won't support alternative energy sources from oil seeds and sugarbeet.
