I have been wondering, (uh oh, this oughta be good)
I found free plans for building a scroll saw.
Anyone here know what a pit saw is?
It works like a crosscut saw, only it is for ripping.
The log is placed on supports above a pit.
A guy stands in the pit and pulls the saw down.
Another guy stands on the log and pulls the saw back up.
They used to saw lumber like this in Colonial America.

Wonder if you could scale up a scroll saw
and run logs thru it like this.
Get one of those bandmill blades to use for the blade.
Put the log on a carriage that is inclined slightly
so that the carriage and log travel into the blade.
Start it sawing and go do something else for a while.
Come back to one piece of sawn lumber.
Then start another one to sawing.

Could lumber be sawn this way (albeit slowly)?
I'm thinking short logs, 4 to 6 feet long.

Pooh Bear, they used to have saws like that in Europe in the good old days driven by water wheels or windmills.

Makes sense that they would.
Pit Sawing is hard work.
And welding band saw blades wasn't an option at the time.
Steel production wasn't quite to the point of being
able to produce circular blades that would stay sharp.
So mechanizing a pit saw would be a good idea.

Try www.machinebuilders.net.
Go to the plans section and free plans, you'll see a couple there.
